Randy G. Blues,

"east of Oroville"? I'm intrigued. When I'm not working out of the Gulf of Mexico (NOLA office) or the western civil market (SanFran office), I live up the hill from you in The Holy City of Taylorsville.

Born in Hong Kong. Been a proud Canadian for over 20 years. Now reside in Toronto, Ontario.
I made a new years resolution this year to play a musical instrument and stumbled on Adam's youtube videos. Perhaps I am meant to play the harp. It's my passion at the moment and I admit being (just) a little obsessive about the playing the harp.

I was born in Syracuse, N.Y. I lived in Cortland, Ithaca, Binghamton, Delmar, Westmere, Altamont, Guilderland, Schenectady and Albany, all in N.Y.

While not living in New York I resided in Callus, Maine, Clarion, P.A., and Tallahassee, Florida.

These days I don't even like to move from my couch, let alone to another zip code or state. I currently reside in Guilderland, population 32,000, a suburb of Albany. I see deer and turkeys in my back yard but I can drive 10 minutes and be in front of the state capitol. Great shopping, minor league sports... if I sound like I'm pitching Albany, well, I am!!! Everyone here is so...

boring. Please, someone interesting move to Albany!

...and just read more and saw sgsax and Preston's posts.

sgsax - I spent last Saturday in the Flint Hills - did the Z-Bar & bus tour; ate at Emma Chase Cafe in Cottonwood Falls. The guy running it was great, 'We made it easy for you, there's only one thing on the menu tonight' (roast beef). Had a great piece of goosebery pie for dessert, which is pretty hard to find in the city.

Preston: Is Ricci at Westport in KCMO? BTW - I went to school in Baldwin, and will be cutting through Gardner on my way there this Saturday.

Born in Tupelo, MS in '57. Grew up in Alabama. Currently live in Birmingham, AL. Been playing harp for 4 months now thanks to Adam. Been a blues guy ever since I saw the Allman Brothers in '70.Through them I learned about Elmore James, Muddy, Howlin, Walter and all of these wonderful guys. Been a huge fan of Mississipp Hill Country blues for many years now.
Agronomist by education. Huge plant lover. Got burned out working in agronomy and now just a working stiff doing irrigation installation and repair. 4 kids and three wife's. Been widowed and divorced. Raised 3 kids as a single parent. They all turned out great in spite of me. One young one who lives with her mom but spends half the year with me. A new wonderful wife now. Very happy. Learning to play the harp has been sooooooo wonderful. Now I listen to all of my old blues albums with a new vigor. At 52 its great to find new motiation to accomplish something new with something I haved loved for so long. I look forward in a couple of years to "releasing" my blues playing.
Thanks for the great lessons Adam. I am very greatful.
I am fortunate that we have a great little juke joint outside of Birmingham called Gip's Place. Such wonderful blues being played there. Adam, saw you and Satan there a while back, great show. Look forward to you coming back. If any of y'all are ever in Birmingham don't miss the opportunity to visit Gip's. A wonderful person and great blues man.

Born in West by God Virginia. Grew up on the banks of the Elk River, all I had to do to be in that sweet, emerald green Elk water was go to the backyard and jump in.
Spent part of my college years in Philippi, West Virginia, a smaller part studying in Salzburg, Austria.
Then, back to West Virginia in Parkersburg. I currently am an Elk River expatriate living deep in the heart of Yankeedom, 70 miles north of the Elk in Parkersburg, West Virginia.

The interesting thing is between back home in Elkview and here in Parkersburg, runs the dividing line between the South Appalachian Midland dialect and Midland. You can pull off at the gas stations along the way and hear the change. People think everybody in West Virginia talks like I do, that is not true, they talk like Yankees up here. I am the only person in Parkersburg without an accent, lol ;)

Fortunately, I am not so far north that I am north of the slaw line.
What is a West Virginia Hot Dog: http://www.wvhotdogs.com/index.html West Virginia Slaw Mapping Project: http://www.wvhotdogs.com/slawmap.html

One can still get cole slaw on hot dogs here. Go 45 minutes north and you are in this bizarre world without hot dog slaw.

The Burger Carte in Smithers scored 4.5 weenies on WVhotdogs.com
http://www.wvhotdogs.com/burgercart.html
The Tamarack in Beckley, which everybody ought to go to for non-hot-dog stuff, got a decent review.
http://www.wvhotdogs.com/tamarack.html
Sams in Gauley Bridge scored a mere 3 Weenies.
http://www.wvhotdogs.com/samsgauley.html

This is what to look for, taken from www.wvhotdogs.com.
" What is a West Virginia Hot Dog?

A true West Virginia hot dog is a heavenly creation that begins with a wiener on a bun. Add mustard, a chili-like sauce and top it off with coleslaw and chopped onions and you have a symphony of taste that quite possibly is the reason that many transplanted West Virginians can never really be happy living anywhere else (note from Dave, had they West Virginia hot dogs in Austria, I might have stayed). Different parts of West Virginia have variations on the theme but the common elements are sweet, creamy coleslaw and chili. Anything else is just not a true West Virginia hot dog!

The chili and coleslaw have a synergistic relationship on a WVHD. While the chili adds a spicy kick the slaw balances the heat with its cool sweetness. A great WVHD has to have these two elements working together in the right combination. If chili isn't spicy enough a sweet slaw will dominate too much. A bland slaw will allow a spicy chili to rule the taste buds.

Unlike New Yorkers or Chicago hot dog lovers, the WVHD connoisseur is not overly concerned with the taste of the wiener. A good weenie will make a better dog to be sure, but even a lackluster weenie can sit on a great WVHD if the chili and slaw work together properly. Likewise with onions and mustard: Good ingredients make it better but nothing is as important to the taste of a WVHD as a good chili/slaw combination."

Cool, get to post next to Salisbury UK I live in Salisbury, Missouri. Born in Kansas but lived in Kansas City, Missouri for 40+ years. Played a lot of R&B guitar stuff around St. Joseph Missouri in the early 60's but hung it up when the family started. Retired to the country a couple of years ago and have picked up the music thing again. Playing some guitar, bass and recently harmonica. Mostly jam sessions and gigging a couple times a month. Keeps me young in spirit despite the body falling apart. Ran across Adams's YouTube videos awhile back which led me to the forum. Lurk mostly but have learned a lot from you all.

Born and raised in the sunny tropics... Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

It's a 3rd world country out here. I live on a huge 768 year old tree (in a tree house). It's not too bad. We have plumbing but our toilets can be dangerous since it's just a hole looking 6 floors down. We keep cattle prods in tree houses because our biggest pest problem are monkeys (howling gibbons to be exact) and the occasional horn bill bird.

Despite the rough conditions we get 1 MB DSL in our humble little 3 room tree house. It's got good resale value though because of the nice view that looks over the valley.

I aspire one day to move out of this silly treehouse and get a nice cave apartment instead. They're considered "upper class" like luxury apartments due to the space and indoor plumbing!

Hi everybody,

"please allow me to introduce myself..." :)

my civil name is Andreas I was born and raised in Frankfurt at the river Main in Germany, where I also spent most of my life with short "intermezzos" in Munich for three years and Leuven in Belgium for a couple of month.

Personally I discovered music for myself quiet late in 1990 at the age of 25. After a short "warm up phase" and jam sessions, I played the harp in amateur bands and we even had some gigs in small pubs with free drinks and some tip.

In the mid 90s I (eventually) finished my academic studies. Regarding the estimated income of a scientist compared to that of a musician (of my skill at least) I decided to move to Munich. Pitiablely music was something that comes from the radio from that day on.

Today I neither work as a scientist nor as a musician but have a small IT company. Moving my bureau some old harps and with them some welcomed memories arose. So I blow and (stupid enough) draw of the dust. There it was again. It laid there buried under years of changing emotions from success and happiness to deepest frustration digging its way to surface. The Blues. My skill was rusty as the harps but the blues has grown even bigger.

And here I go again. Back with such a powerful tool like the internet, which was unimaginable in the mid 90s, I started a research of what happen during all that years. I could not believe what i found; there are tons of information. Thanks to Adam Gussow and Jason Ricci (and others I may have not found yet). Even if I would have spent the last 15 years on the road I would not have learnt what I learnt from their videos in last couple of weeks.

I am proud to become part of your community. Keep on blowing.

I am a bass player (59 years young)in a blues band. Luckily one of the guitar players takes my bass when I blow. I used to play blues harp like 30 years ago and I'm starting all over and there is soooooo much more educational info available now to get back in the groove. Just acquired 2 59 Bassman amps which I'll be modifying slightly for harp ( I modify Fender amps as a side business). For band rehearsals I'm using a Fender 57 Deluxe and my mics are a 69 Shure Green Bullet and a 50 Shure Bullet with a 61 CM. Currently using Lee Oscar harps.

Hey gang. New to the forum, although I have 'lurked' and gleaned some great info for quite some time since learning the existence of this site. Here goes:

Born in Gulfport, MS in '69, two days before the first moonwalk(sorry Michael Jackson). My first hurricane was Camille when I was 4 weeks old. Spent the next twelve years moving around between New Orleans, Southeast TX, and the Bay Area, getting my highway and frequent flier miles as many 'divorce kids' do...Spent my formative years and my adulthood in SE Louisiana-NOLA, baby! I come from musical blood, and I've been a singer since I was very young, performing in musicals here and there to make my folks happy. Got into singing for rock bands in high school, and began playing harp 20 years ago by necessity rather than curiosity, when a band I was the new singer for played 'What I Like About You' by The Romantics...it had a harmonica solo, and everyone else had their hands full, so I got a harp(in the wrong key at first), and soon found my niche instrument. Played in several mostly rock bands in NOLA where I have usually been the lead singer, and I always push for harp time. I've also done a few recordings and sideman work from time to time. I'll find the proper thread on here to list my influences. Currently I front an all-original band called am540(got a page on myspace, and a recording in the final phases of mixing). Additionally, myself and a fella named Harvey Berman started the Crescent City Harmonica Club, almost a year ago to the day. Nice to virtually meet y'all!-tlg
