When we think about where commercial music is , and , where it may or may not go ... it Will be the younger generation that carries it on .. bringing it with them into the next generations of music enthusiasts ..
Key word is commercial , $$ is what makes the world go around ....
Timing is crucial , in biz .... and on the bandstand ...

I'm 56 ,
the harmonica/vocals been playing me for apx. 40 yrs. + , still not close to where i'd like to be .. fronting a successful band ... no easy task for you of those who are so inclined .... for so many reasons ...

Was lucky in a way to watch a good friend coming up, in the same town, at the same time :
Mitch Kashmar & The Pontiax

Mitch is so gifted , arranging , harp control & vocally .. was then & still is ... and he had a talented bunch of guy's in The Pontiax ...

Fronting a band & success .. learning just a bit of what that takes , just a bit ... I knew I'd not achieve that level ...
well don't know what the ratio is , but I'd guess only 1 in a million or less can really make that happen ...

Before the advent of the internet, for you young folks .. ya there was a life before internet : )
I was all but convinced that the music I relate to ... jump , swing (club music) and Delta blues .... would die out before I did ... pop, rap , etc is what sells to the the people who spend $$ on music ... the young folks under 30 ?

How many of you folks are under 30 ?

Really appreciate to see sites like AG's and the rest ..
AG made a post sort of questioning this, though it was more directed to who would be influential in the future, if I read that right ..
and posted one of my all time favorite vid's to emphasize his point .. which was a bit different than mine though still applies imo ..

Hellzapoppin : from 1941

Who will pass it on ? Where is it going ? Will bands still be performing ?
Will there be more than a handful of folks who are into this in the next 25 - 60 years ...

The clubs ... jump blues .. country swing & even 'crying in your beer' music ... brought a whole lot of joy (and women) into my life ...
I hope it does the same for those into it .. and the generations to follow .. though I have my doubts ... hence this post ...

Clap your hands and stomp your feet !

Cheers, MC

After seeing this pic .. get's me wondering about what kind of embouchure a player could get without false teeth ? ....

To twist a J.Giels Band saying

"take out those false teeth mamma , gonna suk on my hamonica"

I'm only getting into the harp, but have a duo I sing in. Male/ female with two guitars ala gillian welch and dave rawlings. Mix of folk and country blues. I'm 27 and plan to be at it for a long time.

I'm right there with you, Grayowl. How the hell did I get this old this fast?

Saw a T-shirt that said:

"I may be old, but I got to see all the really great bands!"

Same as Grey Owl, 63. I have underwear , and harps, older than some of the posters to this thread. :)

@Coltrane, Gillian Welch is one of my favorite singers. I wish they recorded more.

31. Born 1982 which let me culminate my boyhood summer of -94. With the Soccer World Cup in USA. With Sweden grabbing that bronze. Ah, those hot summer nights of watching games and running outside in half time kicking crosses on the field close by...

I turned 57 on Saturday June 29th. i played a wonderful gig/party at a club. i drank whiskey, hugged a pretty girl, and while doing so dropped my 64 chromatic and snapped a mouthpiece screw in half.
i did the gig w/ red electrical tape holding my chro together. Gmaj7th has a replacement screw for me. He is totally cool. Please patronize this gentleman. He knows what for on all things harp.

55.
Still with two Uni student kids living at home. Need to work to feed them - which interrupts (but funds) my harmonica activities.
Is there economic light at the end of the tunnel when they finish Uni and get full time jobs (I hope), or is that an oncoming train?

41 and aching that I didn't take up the harp in my teens. Or 20's. Or early 30's. I'm sure I'd be famous by now! I could have been a contender!!! (I'd still probably be trying to figure consistent overblows out.)

I am 32 and am certain there is more "swing" blues being played and made today than in any other time in history.

The issue isn't access. The music isn't pop music, and only sorta ever was. It has more going on than before if you're into that niche, though.

All that have answered Thanks for taking the time to do so !

I been living in se asia for a bit over 20 years .. not at all tuned into whats happening in the US or Europe ... missing out on the current scene for sure ..

Real good to see there's some folks young and motivated to keeping the music flowing ..

The music never has been interesting to the younger set that spend $$ on music , so selling it never been easy ,

for keeping bars , clubs, concerts a jumping .. different story : )

Something that would be really helpful to forum members in addition to this would be to find out roughly where in the world people were from and are currently living. I'm not talking about listing full addresses, but city / county or state and country as required or as freely as one cares to divulge.

As for me: 43 years old from and living in Portsmouth, England.

Or as Jethro Tull played

So the old Rocker gets out his bike
to make a ton before he takes his leave.
Up on the A1 by Scotch Corner
just like it used to be.
And as he flies --- tears in his eyes ---
his wind-whipped words echo the final take
and he hits the trunk road doing around 120
with no room left to brake.

And he was too old to Rock'n'Roll but he was too young to die.
No, you're never too old to Rock'n'Roll if you're too young to die
