So, I've devised a little challenge to get the forum's juices flowing like it used to in the old days.
Anyone can take part, it doesn't take long and you don't have to spend hours doing re-takes, re-records etc.
What can you do to impress the other forum members in under 30 seconds?
This is what I've done and it's only 16 seconds in length. If this idea gets any legs, I'll have another go and blow you all away.
Please! it must be your own harp playing. The experts here will know straight away if you're cheating. They think I sound like Sonny Terry:o) (But only when I whoop).
It works fine for me. Stones, you'll need to host it somewhere else. I use Dropbox. (It's actually really good for storing all sorts of useful info.) You Download the Dropbox app, and it makes a little folder on your computer. You open the folder and there is a 'public' folder inside. You drop the file in the public folder and right click it. You'll have an option to copy the public link for the file. Take that public link and put it in the html.
Well, here's mine! It's a tad bit longer than the 30 second limit, but I hope you'll give me some leeway because I needed time to build up the loop. I'm using a Bb Seydel Soloist Pro that I retuned to Natural Minor. The effects are custom patches I made on my RP155, which I used to do the looping too. It was done in one take. I hope you enjoy it!
Zadozica, Dropbox works with audio, although it looks like it can have some issues with file formats. The HTML I listed above works fine with wave files, but it auto starts mp3's despite being set to 'auto start="false". The way arzajac posted his works fine with Dropbox too, at least with the .wav and .mp3 files I tried, and doesn't seem to have any auto start issues.
Make sure your file is inside the public folder inside the Dropbox folder. Then right-click it, click on Dropbox-->Copy Public Link and replace the address in the HTML above with your link.
And for anyone trying to post HTML help for anyone, this link is great:
It will add HTML to your HTML so it displays like text instead of HTML. If you don't know what that means, don't worry about it, but if you do, you know what I mean. :)
Here's mine... did about 15 recordings until I got to this one... felt like I was rushing each time. Found out I can't do much in 30 seconds, but I can almost do something in 40!
This is a great idea. A short clip is just enough to get folks to post, but not too large for it too be a huge challenge. This may lead to more people posting clips in the future since people who have never done this before are learning how to upload files.
I should mention that I am trying to do this through my iPad. I downloaded Dropbox into it but it would only work with photos and videos. Moreover, when I tried to listen to Brothergerr, Mediafire would not play the sound clip. I have the same issue with Walter - I have to be on a computer to listen to them although I can listen to Arzajac.
@tookatooka: by "your own harp playing" do you mean that it needs to be an original composition or can I post 30 seconds of the song I'm currently learning? ---------- Ozark Rich __________ ##########
@Ant. If you are using a laptop or PC, I'll bet it has a recorder for recording wav or wma files. Search for recorder and you should find it. ----------
btw: GREAT entries from everyone so far. I REALLY like what jodanchudan was doing there, and when it stopped at the 31 second mark, I was heartbroken (in good way)! Keep 'em comin!
My pipe was of the green variety, ive not touched tobacco in over a year:o)
This thread has got me thinking. Maybe we could have a lick thread where we can post licks in small soundbites for others to learn.
Maybe the person posting the lick could run through it once at normal pace then maybe once slower and that's it. Just a quick hitter forcing the person to listen to what's being played and then try figure it out.
It could be a cool place to trade licks. ----------

Ok, two for the price of one- For the first one I just rerecorded the first thing I ever wrote for harmonica. I played it on a C harp, instead of the original G and I added a .1 echo with .5 decay in Audacity.
And the second one I is the harp part from one of my bands songs, only I can't figure out how to end it without the guitar- so even the short version runs long and I have to cut it off abruptly. No effects.
Both are played on a C Lee Oskar, in first and second positions, respectively (I think- I can't seem to resolve the second one!) I'll try to add something new later. I've just had these two stuck in my head.
I worked on something between study for finals. I was feeling like I kept playing the same things so I ventured around new ideas, found one, worked on it for a few minutes and recorded it - that is to say, the presentation is definitely not to my standard. (and it is played in a green bullet directly to my PC, yuck..)
Here is one with some pictures of the harp rack mic rig I used with the drums on my feet and keys and some photos some might reconize. It was all made up as I go along - as usual. Walter
here is the entire song if anyone is interested
