A few months ago I got a Fender Greta amp, I mostly bought it due to it being a small (tiny, wee) tube amp that wouldn't take up much room in the house. My wife certainly prefered having it in the living room over the epiphone valve jnr, based on looks alone.
I also like the pignose 7-100 and thought it would be an upgrade on that, tone wise with it being all tube. The ability to plug in an ipod or mp3 player was an added draw as I could then use it to play backing tracks as well.
Sadly it didn't work out, the tone for playing was ok, but just ok and no better than the pignose and certainly not as loud. The use on an ipod to play backing to was severely hampered by any overdriven sound from the harmonica would also distort the backing tracks, which made it pretty pointless from that point of view. Even using it as a tube amp for the ipod alone wasn't terribly impressive as it also distorted quite easily.
All in all a lovely looking amp but that's where the good points ended for me, it's since been bought on ebay by a guitar player (after all that's what it was made for), but sometimes you just have to try these things and see how they work for you.
I just thought I'd post to share my experience fot any of you that might be thinking about it's use for the harp.
cheers Greg

Thanks - I was curious. I have a Fender Champ 600 which has a 6" speaker, but was also curious about even smaller amps.
If there are decent amps out there with 4" speakers, I'd be interested.

I have a Greta. A strat sounds GREAT for apartment level volume. I mean, really great. It's a very lively sound.
I also use it for some ipod listening. I like the sound, it's different then my Tivoli PAL. I guess I like the PAL better, but I'm still exploring the Greta. Just now enjoying No Quarter .... there's something very AM about it, but in a good way. ---------- Sun, sun, sun Burn, burn, burn Soon, soon, soon Moon, moon, moon

i have a phone number for Fender. it's the one they don't give out to the average punter. if you call it and make a nuisance of yourself they send you a free t-shirt just to shut you up. a friend called and got a free Telecaster T-shirt w/ a television on it. get it? tele?
thanks, was curious about the Greta. was just getting over the Excelsior and here comes another one...

I always thought the Greta would make a good companion with a larger amplifier. Set it on top of the biggie and run the line out into it....with it's vintage looks and killer little VU meter, it'd make a great looking preamp addition. Only thing I'm not wild about is the candy apple red color. A bit of a clash with any other amp you might use it with...but that's just me.

Oisin,
no i haven't. there was one at a local Fender dealer music store. Fender dealers are supposed to run a promo on all new stuff and they had just acquired exactly one floor model Excelsior. The deal is that if you try any Fender guitar or amp, you get a free Fender T-shirt. well, i told them this bit of info and they said they no likey. in mock protest, i didn't bother to even try the Ex. maybe MojoKane has tried it. it looks cool, has a 15 and won't give you back problems. also three inputs.
i usually wait till a product has been around for a while till i test it. i didn't try the 2005 MBD till it a student bought one. then i bought two for myself. ---------- MP affordable reed replacement and repairs.
