1. Hohners. I seem to be settling on Golden Melodies on the high keys and some type of Marine Band on the rest, but I wish I had a few more non-MS Meisterklasses to try out.

2. I prefer good music.

1. I play various marine bands mainly. Crossovers, 1896s, deluxe, sp 20.
2. Hard bop, blues, bluegrass, country, 30s dance band swing.
3. Always liked it. Wanted to sing. Thought being an ordinary singer wasn't sufficient to keep me in the band. Discovered playing bad harp didn't help.
Harmonica intrigued me as a youngster because I couldn't believe it was possible to play individual holes. I still can't believe it.

Sixties.
There was a band playing outside in a park.
The harp player was wearing a belt full of harps, I couldn't understand why.
Back home, I still could hear the music, about 2.5 km far from the park, but the harp's sound was the loudest: I was really impressed by that.
End of sixties: I heard for the first time "Smokestack Lightnin'" by the Yardbirds and this was the spark.
Cannot answer the two first questions (multiple answers).

INTERIM SURVEY RESULTS

In a completely unscientific poll, participants were asked 3 seemingly simple, but perhaps revealing questions. Here’s what we've learned up to now:

TOTAL RESPONSES: (So far)
18
HARP PREFENENCES:
Seydels 4
Hohners 10
Lee Oscars 1
B-Radical 1
Undecided 2

100 % of Sedyel users in this thread (up to now) tend to gravitate to the same model, Seydel 1847 even though Seydel offers a large variety of harmonicas.

Hohner, overall, has a larger following, but the loyalties are split between models.
30% of Hohner users chose the Marine Band Deluxe
20% of Hohner users chose Crossovers
20% of Hohner users chose Golden Melodies
20% of Hohner users chose Special 20s
10% of Hohner users chose Classic Marine Bands

Lee Oscars received only 1 vote
B-Radicals received only 1 vote

Undecideds cast 2 votes (no actual preferences)
---
61% of participants began playing as a result of hearing another player
17% began playing because of portability or the "sound" of the instrument
11% started because of their interest in Blues music
11% were motivated or started by OTHER methods/reasons

*Of special interest is that Suzuki harps have not been mentioned. However I purchased three of them in the past 30 days, 2 Manji's and a PromasterV

Let's see if the numbers hold as more members participate.

SP 20s,
Blues
Started to play at UCSB to impress my girlfriend after hearing Dylan on Highway 61. Even on that album the song I gravitated to was It Takes A Train To Cry. Then, after transferring to Berkeley (following the girlfriend), I saw blues harp players out on Telegraph Ave. with belts full of harps. How cool! Bought some Sonny Terry and George Smith, and never looked back. The sound of a harp playing the blues has always been, to me, the sweetest sound in the world.

3. Motivations/Inspriations... At age 8: hearing my grandfather and father play country harp. Then as a teenager: hearing the harp of John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Neil Young, John Kay, Roger Daltry, Magic Dick, Robert Plant, Steven Tyler, etc. embedded in the fabric of 60s/70s rock. Then as an adult: discovering the blues harp of Paul Butterfield, Little Walter, Sonny Boy, Slim Harpo, Jimmy Reed, etc.

1. Mainly Crossovers, also a few MB Deluxe
2. Playing and listening - slightly left-of-centre blues, roots music, alt-country, soul, the bluesier end of jazz, funk, some rock
3. Always liked the sound when my older brother played blues on his guitar, then hearing Sugar Blue play "Another Man Done Gone" on the Blues at Montreux album, then finally having the misguided view that a harmonica would be easier to learn how to play well than say, a guitar

Update

I intend do my non-professional, nerdy analysis of your responses (as I did earlier) but I can only count the very first harp you list as your "preferred harmonica." After all, we all most likely have a variety of harps, right? Always include the brand and model. Keep’m coming, the more responses - the better.

Tenga U, very much, please
