1. What is your preferred harmonica? 2. What is your preferred genre, (Blues, Jazz, etc.)? 3. What motivated you to start playing harp in the first place? ----------
1.Over the years, Hohner Special 20s have been my harmonica of choice. For the price, they are best value for out of the box consistency in tone, playability and resilience. As much as I admire what the MB Crossover or Promasters, Special 20s are my first pick.
2. I like jblues, jazz/blues and fusion. These fit my style, which tends to be fast, precise and sharp. I like playing country and bossa nova and gypsy swing at times, as it forces me to play melodically and learn new things. My playing tends to get monotonous if I stay in one style too long. Keep it fresh and remain teachable.
3. I first started with guitar lessons but I had no natural aptitude for the instrument. My fingers were too clumsy on the frets and I was unwilling to do the work. In 1966 or 1967 I saw the original Paul Butterfield Blues Band at a no age limit folk music club called the Chessmate in Detroit, at Livernois and 6 Mile Road. It was all over at that moment. I got a Marine Band the following day and have been playing ever since.

My apologies for the extended remarks if anyone gets bored...
1. What is your preferred harmonica?
Suzuki Manji. I enjoy Special 20's as well as regular Hohner Marine Band's, but Manji is preferred right now.
2. What is your preferred genre, (Blues, Jazz, etc.)?
For harmonica, Chicago style blues. Musically, it would have to be jazz - traditional, bebop, fusion; actually anything except extreme doses of country is preferable. Certainly not hip hop, rap, house and variations on these themes. I believe that they are a waste of time and have greatly contributed to the dumbing down of American youth musically, and on a larger plane, the entire American society.
Oh, and smooth jazz - contemporary R&B is unimaginative, quite boring and has turned into Muzak.
3. What motivated you to start playing harp in the first place?
When I was a young boy....about the age of 5....I wanted to learn to play the piano. My godmother had an upright piano in their living room for her daughters, and I used to plunk around when I visited. When I asked my parents if we could get a piano, being practical post-WWII immigrants with "loftier" goals for their children, they said No. I had attempted to learn acoustic guitar in later years with no success, and never had formal musical training, although I am an avid music fan. I never lost my desire to play an instrument and make music.
When on or about 2005, through the wonders of the Internet, I saw an advertisement for Jerry Portnoy's Blues Harmonica Masterclass CD's, I bought a harmonica and the CD'S and was hooked. But the lessons and harp remained parked in a box during the next 3 years (personal upheaval and divorce). It was not until I saw the advertisement for the Hill Country Harmonica festival in 2009 (and my girlfriend's urging to pick up the harp again as well as attend) that I made a serious effort to learn to play.
So the long answer is the desire to play a musical instrument, but the immediate impetus has been the presence of Adam Gussow on the Internet and his almost superhuman efforts to push blues harmonica into the consciousness of people like us and help us realize our musical dreams.

1. I am still loking, but Bluesmaster would be my choise. 2. Blues 3. When a move out of my parents house, and start making some money, I decide to try to learn how to play an instrument. My girlfriends told me that the harp was the easiest instrument to play, so I went to buy a harp. Those first month were really frustrating, because I try to learn by my self, only whit YouTube. At the time I start leasing "Harmonica music" and few months down the road I buy a electric guitar, because I don't really get it how harps works. The things is that I always come back to the harp leaving the guitar on the side. The time was passing and I began to feel more comfortable whit the harp (even play some melodies!), so I decide that that will be my instrument. So far so good, I rely enjoy play harmonica, I am not good at it, but I really really like it.

Mainly Lee Oscars, but more recently Seydel Session Steel and Suzuki Promasters.
Love the blues, but have to admit that my first love is prog rock
Listening to Ian Anderson of the band Jethro Tull playing,(he didn't that often) and realising that harp could be something more than something a folksinger could stick in a rack and blow. Later, the playing of Brendan Power.

I noticed only one Hering harp (Vintage). I own (notably) some Hering Black blues. This being said to pay tribute to those instruments, seemingly widely -but undeservedly- ignored, and to make Noodles' votes counting easier.

suzuki pureharp (my A is awesome... not so happy yet with the C yet)... unique tone and feel... i may be the only saying dannecker (i have an optimus in low D that i love) blues, jazz, traditional/celtic my father and grandpa played... that's at least why i started when i was a kid. then i think maybe john mayall stoked me when i was older. met an old guy near where i went to college that said i had the wrong skin colot to be trying to play the blues and taught me arkansas traveler and other tunes in 1st position and i was hooked on fiddle music... and then when i heard rhythm willie it was kind of all over... blues... in first position!

Little Onion, when the reeds go out in the C, and they will, replace with reedplates from a Bushman Delta Frost. Much more responsive, louder, very durable and sounds terrific.

1 Hohner Golden Melody,12 and 16 hole hohner chromatics 2 blues, country, shuffle blues/jazz ala Mose Allison. 3 When I was a kid in the late fifties,13,14 years old my dad gave me a short wave radio receiver that had killer AM reception. It also had earphones, common now unuasual then. When I was supposed to be asleep I'd search the dial and I found WLAC from Nashville. There were "race music" shows with DJs Big John R and Hoss Allen, that featured black music, all kinds. Largely sponsored by mail-order record stores, Randy's record shop in Gallatin Tenn, and other "race products" like hair and beauty stuff. I was exposed to The Walters, both Sonnyboys, Jimmy Reed, Slim Harpo et al at a formative age and it was all downhill after that. Next thing ya know you're looking for record stores in the "bad parts of town". Harps were cheap, portable, and nobody else played. Even when you sounded shitty it was at least different. When you bent those first notes, watch out. In college when you explained the lingual agility it took to play to women, that helped a homely SOB like me.
