Until recently, there was a utility that allowed YouTube videos to be converted to mp3 format, then downloaded to the computer. Was great for getting songs unable to be found anywhere. Now Screw Tube embedded some code into the links so nobody can download & listen to the songs on their computer. This is complete corporate greed. And nobody can tell me the artist is losing money, because if there was the same song heard on the radio, or played from a record, that song can be recorded onto cassette for listening. We are losing more freedoms everyday. YouTube should be banned until they serve the people, not the corporations.

I suspect they did it to avoid being sued. From a strictly legal point of view it's not the same as recording off the radio, because videos are on demand. Personally I think that there are better models for music than paying for digital copies. There are services that allow you, for a monthly fee, to listen to all the free music you want. Something similar to the BBC model or the library model might work. The BBC model would basically be a government run version those fee for unlimited music sites (with the advantage that would everything would be on it). The library model would institute a tax on everyone and that tax would be used to pay all the artists based on plays. Without something like that in place though, taking music from YouTube is stealing revenue from the artist, unless the artist specifically puts it out there for free. I haven't seen the new policy in action. Is there any distinction based on if the owner of the music gives permission to download? As a matter of law, non-commercial covers and recordings of public performances aren't covered under copyright, along with some other fair use uses. If they are blocking some of those, then the policy seems draconian. If they are blocking you from downloading other peoples music without their permission then I'd argue that unless we build one of these other systems to compensate the artists they are doing the right thing legally. They certainly could use their copyright scanning combined with a checkbox system to allow people to post their own music for download.
(I just downloaded a song from YouTube the other day, with the artists permission. He didn't have any other way to distribute it in place. Hi Hakan!)

First off, there are a ton of addons for firefox that still let you download the video, and some that even rip the audio and give it to you as an MP3. Clearly the one you were using simply stopped working because of some format changes or scripting changes that occurred within YouTube. Likely, development for your particular addon isn't keeping pace, so probably it's time to find a new one (I just dumped "keeptube", which started acting funny, and am now using "easy youtube downloader 6.0", which seems to work perfectly so far).
Second, YouTube is owned by Google, which is a publicly traded corporation. So probably it's best not to get mad at it for having profit-motives, since it *is* a for-profit venture... But, being for-profit doesn't mean it's completely soul-less or malevolent. Sure, there are some bad things about it, but there still are a TON of great things about YouTube. I've found some new artists on there I never in a million years would haveknown about otherwise, and I've learned how to play every single musical instrument I own via YouTube videos. Not to mention the bazillion cute cat videos I've watched over the years!!! :)Probably, the best thing to do is to simply take advantage of it as best you can, and don't sweat the small stuff! ;) ----------

"my father and I shooting Blues Bands with Buffalo rifles"
Couldn't you guys shoot rock bands instead? There are a lot more of them, after all.

so youtube provides access to thousands of videos on all kinds of subjects for free, and you want to boycott them because your former method of subverting their business model to take something they don't choose to offer no longer works? why would they care?

I use FreeYouTubeDownloader all the time. Let's you download the vids to your computer in different file formats, lets you download just the audio in MP3 format....you just have to keep up with the updates to the software and it works. ----------

I use DownloadHelper, which is a Firefox extension that has a conversion function. In fact, I only just finished downloading a whole bunch of Lee Sankey's excellent videos.
As for boycotting YouTube, that's a bit like boycotting your local water utility: where else are you going to get your water? The analogy isn't perfect, but I expect you see my point. ---------- YouTube ditties
