Any bets on who this unidentified player is? Joe Filisko? Brendan Power? If it's Brendan, please don't call him a dog. That's against the forum creed.

Oh man! that sounds SOOO familiar! Something about it is uniquely identifiable, but I can't put my finger on it, nor can I think of who exactly it is! But I've heard that sound before!!!!

Ditto on Howard. He and Charlie seem to be the usual go-to guys for movie soundtracks.

Bluesy Happy Birthday! Cool.

I've been learning it for a 40th birthday gig at the end of the month.

It's interesting. It's got very rich chords. There are a few individual bends that stand out later, but with a little editing, if you skipped the first 30 seconds, you could convince me it was played on a concertina.

Just as an exercise, taking a basic melody like that and working it up is a great way to develop your chops. I was pretty happy with my Happy Birthday, but after hearing that, I'm going back to the woodshed.

@beets

Levy's a Brooklyn boy. And Tony Dannecker's based in London...but I highly doubt that's him.

@Hawkeye Kane, "...Tony Dannecker's based in London...but I highly doubt that's him." Antony builds harps but he doesn't play them.

Whoever it is, it doesn't seem to be the original:

@5F6H

Good thing I doubted it was him then, eh? ;-)

That's one thing I don't get though....how can you BUILD a harp, and not PLAY one?

Which is the original...?

Episode 512 was from 1980 & featured the "Oh Susannah" sketch...I'm beginning to wonder whether Beauregarde actually played on either clip!? ;-)

I'm going with a student of Filisko, i.e. Sleigh. The chords are obviously based in the Filisko influence, but that's not his specific technique.

As it's obviously an overdub I guess it could have been anyone active up until the present, and recorded anywhere - however might it not be more likely that it was someone active *around* the time the show was being made, up til '81?

EDIT - Sorry MrVLUN, I was posting at the same time as you.

Richard Sleigh/Joe Filisko, Birds of the feather, brothers in arms, Saints of the instrument, ambassadors of faith, love and understanding. I thought I recognized Joes cough that sets off a note, so guessed him. Jim Conway could probably do that song supreme justice too...

Adam, it is Richard Sleigh. The audio is lifted from the clip I posted, watch the whole clip. The version dubbed onto the Muppet clip starts a little while in. He plays one version, then talks to the camera and then plays the one we're discussing.

I'd be interested to know what Richard thinks about this. Whoever made that clip should have at least given him credit.

Kudzurunner, Mr VLUN has already got to the bottom of it, it IS Sleigh, whether he knows it or not (he might not even be aware himself, could have been patched up without his prior knowledge). The actual audio (50 seconds from 0:45 to 1:35) from the Sleigh clip Mr VLUN posted has been overdubbed onto the original, slowed down, Muppet show clip.

@KingoBad "5F6H, Sesame Street is still being made. They did not stop in 81. Ever hear of Elmo?"

The Muppet Show (not Sesame Street), Beauregarde "Oh Susannah" footage, over which Sleigh's harp is dubbed, was made in 1980 - Google "Muppets episode 512". The Muppet Show was made at Elstree, UK until 1981. *If* it had been the original audio (I did speculate that it may not have been) it would have to have been recorded in that timeframe.

I do know that Kermit et all are still alive & working, he and Miss Piggy were on the Jonathan Ross show promoting their new movie a couple of months ago...mind you Beaker always seemed rather accident prone, has anyone been in touch with him lately...can anyone confirm that Beaker is OK?! :-o

Thanks stan for taking me back to grade 7 for a moment, I think the question was usually worded so the answer was slightly less obvious thus giving it a hope of getting a laugh of surprise at least rather than simply being a crude remark in the form of a question.

There is a guy out there, Sad Kermit, who does incredibly depressing covers using a Kermit voice. He's got covers of 'Hurt' and 'Needle in the Hay' that are really awesome. The videos are pretty dark though. Hurt includes a half naked picture of Ms. Piggy and Kermit performing a sex act on Rowlf for coke money. The Needle in the Hay has Kermit reenacting the attempted suicide scene from Royal Tenebaums. I love them, but they might not be everyone's taste.

5F6H. - Ha! You are both correct and amazingly well informed about the muppets. I completely ignored the title and went right to Sesame Street. I am tainted by having to young children ...

Nacoran - that Kermit "Hurt" video is fantastic! I do feel like taking a shower afterwards though. I actually learned to play the song on guitar after seeing that video (well, and Johnny Cash's version too...)
