Alex Paclin has brought me a gift from SPAH - a purple dymondwood comb for 1847.

The question is - who made it? IT has H and S letters engraved inside. Alex said the guy was bald and he had lots of those combs.

Why would a bald guy need a comb? Sorry, couldn't resist...

@todd

LOL. Reminds me of an old episode of Mary Tyler Moore. Ted's adopted smartass kid mouths off and Ted takes him Lou's office to spank him. He asks Lou if he has a hairbrush he can use. His kid says "Now what would HE be doing with a hairbrush?!"

@HarpNinja:
Thanks, I wrote him an email. The comb finish is good, but the hole placing and some other minor stuff is wrong. I've sent Matthew a correct and tested corel drawing of a stock 1847 comb.

@Todd:
LOL, nice one

I've used at least six 1847 combs from him with no issues. Not saying your wrong, but I have never had anything to complain about.

His bamboo combs are the best out there, bar none.

I don't know...

Anyway I've filed the screw holes longer and now it fits. About 1mm out of place.

LOL, I know I've asked that before, but still...

Mike, how do you get rid of the smell of dymondwood?

Switch to bamboo. ;)

If you use a water-based lacquer, that helps. I don't really notice it, though. I do think I know what you mean, though.

I've found that with all custom combs that I have to get all the screws started first and then start tightening them. Just last night I had all but one screw in on a GM comb and then it wouldn't fit. I had to then loosen all the others and try again. Worked fine.

Honestly, and this isn't a complaint, I don't understand why the tolerances for the slots on custom combs seem to be so tight. I know Buddha left a lot of room for screw clearance, but all the others I've tried are as narrow as the factory.

I didn't even think of that possibility :-)

He was a huge Viking fan. We talked about that more than harmonica. He had made himself some purple combs like that. I know he had at least one MB with a purple comb at SPAH 2010.

I kept hounding him for one, but he would always send me other colors, lol. When he died, I went to great lengths to find a purple comb myself, but they weren't around. One comb builder was supposed to send me one, but I never got one (which is totally fine). I ordered one immediately from Matthew after he mentioned having purple. Way cool.

I use purple on my G harp (for my girl whose favorite color is purple) and orange on my B harp (for my son whose favorite color is orange. I was going to go by first initials, but there isn't a key of J.

He did...then they were hard to come by, I think. Now he isn't taking comb orders...and at the time they weren't made out of dymonwood...and they cost twice as much as the comb I ended up with.

I am not ragging on Chris, I am just sharing how I ended up with a purple comb like the one in the OP. I thought it was an easy thing to come by, but no one would offer a purple dymonwood like Buddha had when I inquired about getting one nearly a year ago.

Mike,

Not sure what you're talking about. Chris Reynolds has offered purple dymondwood combs, both in grape and in fuchsia, since he's been in business, as well as purple fantasy marble.

The purple gemstone combs were discontinued because of fragility while machining.

Not sure why Buddha was so picky about the fuchsia dymondwood combs... they were available even before Buddha started making them. As much as I liked Buddha, it seems that he made an attempt in the following thread to discredit Chris Reynolds' work, after Chris Reynolds was nice enough to help Buddha when he was initially getting started with comb making, by answering his questions.

custom harp web sites

Btw... Joe Spiers and Richard Sleigh are now offering their own Corian MB combs which look really cool.

And Chris' web site will be back up and running soon, with the same great low prices. Not ashamed to say I'm a Chris Reynold's fan - he's just a classy dude in my book.

When Chris passed away, I contact every comb maker I could think of and asked for a solid purple comb. I just went back through the emails and last winter no one had solid purple readily available (unless there was some miscommunication through the emails).

Corian combs are great. Dick had been working with those for a while, and we talked early this year about moving to corian when he caught me up with dymonwood orders (corian is mentioned and pictured in the Harp Sessions write up from last year). Steven is the only person that has ever asked me specifically for a corian comb, FWIW. The custom GM I built for him had a Rosewood comb and then he got a few more direct from Dick.

I've offered corian to customers, but people seem to go with the dymonwood instead. When I don't use Sjoeberg combs, I almost always use Hetrick combs. His bamboo is by far the best out there. He was gracious enough to offer me a custom color of corian that he'd only make for me, but I ultimately couldn't decide on a color. I was leaning toward night-sky, as the silver-black dymonwood from Dick is very popular, but now that those guys are using black, they are too similar. I love the corian material, but the colors always remind me of my kitchen, lol.

We then decided on black winewood for a custom dymonwood color. I need to post pics. They came out great.

Ninja, I could be miss-remembering, but I think Chris Reynolds said something about having a shortage of purple for the fantasy marble when Buddha passed away (maybe even because of, since I know several people were looking into purple harps at the time). If I remember correctly there was a little wait, with an email explaining, for purple combs. I got the purple comb to sort of make peace with Buddha's memory. He and I didn't end things well.

The comb Chris Reynolds made for me is amazing.

@Lil

Yes. Dick made a small batch of those. I didn't realize he made one for Steven as all the others went to an order from a friend of mine I did 7 harps for.

It was a nightmare getting those done for a number of reasons, and I don't think Dick will do many more like that...my understanding is he is not taking orders for them at the moment.

I think he made that one for Steven because of a mix-up in getting him a corian comb direct from Dick.

@ HarpNinja

I want to publicly thank you for the harps you customized with the Maple/Mahogany combs. You are right, it was very frustrating re the combs. You are a stand up guy and through the whole ordeal never left me hanging. Dick was also very gracious to me and I appreciate his attention to every detail he dealt with in getting the combs to you. They are amazing to look at, amazing to play. I'm still learning the huge differences between your custom harps vs. OOTB. Thank you for your reed & plate work
and all other harp tech skills you put into these harps. Most of all Thank You for your honesty, integrity, and excellent customer service!

You know, I really like the Sjoeberg combs. I think what he calls compression ridges on the tines DO have a favorable effect on response. There are other nice combs out there, but I like Sjoeberg's design.

I don't know if his metal piping actually has the effect he intends, but the compression ridges seem to be very effective.

Hi,

I was lucky to get two fantastic combs by dick Sjoeberg, from a colleague ( Ryan ) who had to leave country on an emergency..though I had to pay much more than what he got them for but I guess that was ok. It took ryan some 8 months to get them!!

I had earlier tried to order the mahagony-maple comb for some time but I think dick wasn't making them cos of the extreme finishing it took..the combs are absolutely beautiful and have to be seen in Person to really appreciate the excellent work..

adding to what Orphan said..when I ordered my custom from Mike and when I got it, I was unhappy cos it didn't overblow the way i hoped and I immediately emailed Mike complaining ( sorry for that Mike)..after spending some time I understood the difference between a harp that u tweak for overblows by urself and a professionally set up overblow harp..
The harp was amazingly responsive and the more I played , the more I enjoyed it!
and the overblow, ..closing the gap a tiny bit since i play with little breath force, made a huge difference.. THANKS MIKE

BTW..MIKE I still haven't got the CORIAN!! im still waiting :)
