Yeah, I like him. In terms of my generation's usual taste of mainstream artists, he's probably the most visible blues harp player these days with the slight decline of Popper. ---------- Hawkeye Kane
OK. WOW. I love to listen to a lot of different music (as we all do, probably). Every now and then a song/sound catches your ear and makes you step back.
I know the name "G. Love" because the band ("G. Love & Special Sauce") made it as a local band in Boston. They had a big hit with "Cold Beverages" which sounds NOTHING like "Fixin' to Die".
In any case, now I have to go and listen to some more of his music. Nice video, Hawkeye.
Yeah, I too mainly remembered him from his "cold beverages" days (I have a couple cd's from that era). I happened to catch him playing his new stuff on Last Call with carson daily about a year ago, and I was flabbergasted. He's turned into QUITE the rack harp player, and his new material is great modern blues stuff. I much prefer this kind of thing to his old stuff. He's one to watch out for for sure. Thanks for posting Hawkeye! ---------- == I S A A C ==
Lo and behold, I just got my weekly digest e-mail from Daytrotter, and it seems that G-Love has just done a session! Follow this link (http://www.daytrotter.com/#!/concert/g-love/20054814-12982) to hear and download for free the live recordings of the songs he performed in the session (including "Fixin to Die")! If you don't know what Daytrotter is, then I apologize for introducing your to you next addiction! ;)
Ya G-Love has been my favorite artist for a long time now. It is really great to hear how much better he gets at the harp through his albums. This album is much different then all his others, produced by the Avett Brothers another great band. If you do not have this album you owe it yourself to pick it up to see that there is still some good music being made!
What I also love about him is his high tenor voice. When you think of male blues singers, they tend to be more baritone. But he carries all the traditional feelings of blues off with a nice growl and impeccable accuracy of tone and key. ---------- Hawkeye Kane
So does he perform live with a band or solo? I can't listen to anything right now, I am assuming the recorded stuff is with a band, but what about gigs?
I bought the CD off iTunes without hearing anything other than Fixin' to Die a few days ago. I am hoping to listen tonight (can't play it now). ---------- Mike Quicksilver Custom Harmonicas VHT Special 6 Mods
He's got his band, known as G. Love & Special Sauce, though he teamed up with the Avett Brothers for his last album. He does some solo work though. He's also toured with Jason Mraz. Off hand, I can't find his schedule if he has one. ---------- Hawkeye Kane
Mike, He Tours alone and with a band. I last saw him a year and half ago opening for Jack Johnson. While I do like Jack Johnson I went to see G Love. He played a set which he called the footstompin blues of G Love. That show it was just him his guitar and of course his harp, he also joined Jack Johnson on stage and played harp with him a few songs. He tours with his band right now and plays solo and with the group during his shows.
Thanks for the info! I am going to try and woodshed Fixin to Die as a OMB song. I think I nailed a version of Katy Perry's ET, which was a very fun chore.
Here he is with Mraz and K'naan a couple years ago in Philly. G. comes in on the harp at about 4:15, but I highly recommend watching the whole smash. It's a great song, and it gets better when Mraz and his cohorts get to freestyling with the lyrics. Also a good example of G. Love's spoken word skills.
