-you dropped a nail and can't find the sucker in the dog hair and detris, or made hash of it putting it back in. maybe the hole is now a little too wide.
remember those pins they put in dress shirts? maybe you can find some in your wifes sewing kit.
clip them to nail size, then hold steady with a needle nose pliers.
file it sharp point.
careful when inserting. they are slightly wider than the original nails. you don't want to rush it and split your comb. even though pearwood is soft, it's a good idea to widden the hole with the unclipped pin by gently pressing it in the hole prior to replacement
they work on the coverplates too.

That's a cool fix.
It won't help if you've bent the nail, but if it's dropped somewhere, a magnet is a pretty good way to find the little buggers! I mentioned that once in the Skype chat and Buddha said that was his weapon of choice for dealing with nails too. I actually keep my spare nails on a magnet.
If you want to convert to screws, 0-80 screw tap set is the way to go, but they are hard to find locally. I finally found one at a model train store.
If the hole is too big you can use a bit of toothpick as a wedge to make the hole tighter.
