Hey everyone! I'm a newbie to this forum (really glad I found it!)
I gotta issue with a MB Deluxe Eb that is driving me nuts and I'm hoping you guys can help. The 2 hole bend squeaks something terrible. I took the harp apart to check and there's a kind of file or grind mark across the second blow reed. (I'm assuming that is some kind of factory tuning.) Nothing else seems obviously wrong.
Any ideas or advice would be great!

If its like a squeal sound you could try putting some dental wax on the rivet end of the reed. I used chapstick cuz thats all I had but it works the same. Just make sure you use just enough to cover the corners of the square rivet end. You really only need to put it on the top two corners of the "box" if you're looking at the harp like you would play it. Easier to do than it is for me to explain lol. Let me know if that helped. ---------- A - Hohner Crossover Bb - Suzuki Manji C - Special 20 D - Marine Band (stock) F - Golden Melody G - Hohner Crossover

I don't think you are getting torsional vibrations that you would need wax for... Particularly for a long slot harp.
I would first check for burrs in your 2 holes (draw and blow)
Then set your gaps as a pair for the 2 hole.
I think BBQ bob had talked abou realigning the reed plates at one point, but I would try to do the other things first.

I'd check for burs first. If that doesn't work check out the forum how-to page and post a sound file of what it sounds like. (The forum how-to link is near the top of the forum page, right under the creed.) When you have a problem with a harp putting a recording online can help people help you pinpoint the problem. :)

@Rich. Does the 2 hole draw sound OK when you are not trying to bend it, or only when you bend it?

dude, sorry to disappoint you but... this fault can't be fixed. You have to replace this reed. Unfortunately, sometime you may come across harmonicas with such manufacturing defects. Many old hohners had that. ---------- www.truechromatic.com

If jim is right, I'd send it back to Hohner. ----------

If the 2 blow gap is too wide it will aggravate the problem. And most of the time I've run into this, it happens at the lowest possible pitch of the bend on that hole. This pitch is very flat of the actual note one should be playing. Try playing it in tune and see if it helps. I agree with Jim, a good reed should not do this. But sometimes good technique can offset inherent mechanical problems.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I checked for burrs and it seems fine. To answer tookatooka's question, yeah, its fine when I don't bend it and all the other holes bend fine.
Think you're right jim, I got a duff one!

I would send it back to Hohner & get them to replace it with one they have tested. ----------

Joe,
I think it is a manufacturing defect - came across this many times in the stiffest hohner serioes ('70s right?)
I managed to get over this with extremely good embossing, but I would not do it for someone else (where I can't be sure the problem will not come back)

i have an old Bb SP/20 with the same problem on #2 draw bend. it has been living in a box in a drawer for a very long time.
since it only happens on a deep bend is it the blow reed that needs to be replaced? jim? ---------- MP hibachi cook for the yakuza doctor of semiotics superhero emeritus

nope, the draw reed.... If you open it, take the 2 full bend and close the draw reed with your finger - you'll hear the awful sound stop... ---------- www.truechromatic.com
