What do you recommend for carrying in your case to be minimally or ultimately prepared for unfamiliar jams you are visiting, or a situation where you know you might be asked to sit in?

I keep 2 cases of 7 in my backpack when I'm going to jam with friends, with a couple loose ones banging around. If I know what I'm playing ahead of time I may pair it down to just the harps I know I'm playing. My dream harp case, well, I've drawn goofy pictures of it, and it's more of a combination dolly and stomp drum/cajon and rocking chair, with space for a full set of harps. I know that's more of a dream case than what to put in the case, but it's this dream that I have.

What's in your backpack of tricks Buddha?
I should probably qualify this as things you might need for the situation above, you probably are more than likely intending to do something, and I am looking at being prepared for the possibilities of doing something.

I have a compact Seydel hard cover case. In it I have my performing set of 12 Buddha harps, 8 Suzuki Hammonds in the most used keys as spares, a lo-z 545 Ultimate, a 20' XLR cord with an on/off switch and a rat tail IMT. I'm covered for any key that might be called, I have spares if a harp jams or a reed goes bad, and I am able to plug into the PA board or an amp. Everything I need to play in a very compact, easy to carry, inconspicuous case.
I just leave my little case packed and it has everything I need if I'm going somewhere I might get invited to sit in, or if I'm going to a jam and don't feel like bringing an amp. I use the same case and contents for paying gigs, but for those I will ordinarily also bring an amp, pedalboard and related peripherals.
Of course for a paying gig I also have a bag with spare cords, extension cords, spare fuses, a couple of small screwdrivers and a bunch of other stuff like that. But i don't take that with me just to sit in even if I do bring an amp and pedalboard. Btw, if I have an amp with me I'll always have a Furman surge block to plug into which has 6 surge suppressed outlets and a 15' cord. Very handy since access to AC power is often limited.

Fortunately, harmonicas are small. I usually have a couple of harps in my pocket in case a run to the car isn't possible. I'll usually carry harps in the keys of A, C and D.
In my car, I may carry a set of harps plus four extras in A, C, D and G. I also have a JT30, an Ultimate hi-Z Shure 545 and a Shure SM-57. I carry adapters and cables for those as well. All of that fits in a small laptop bag.
There are some people that I go see that have told me that I can sit in with them at their gigs. If they know I am showing up in advance, I bring along whatever they suggest, e.g. if they say bring a small amp, I bring a small amp.
If I am going to a jam, it's a different story. If I know a harp player will be in attendance or in the house band, I won't bring an amp. Most of the players here let other players use their stuff as a courtesy.
For example, I attended a jam last night and I knew Greg Heumann was going to be there. Since, usually brings a killer amp, I didn't bring an one. If he hadn't been there, I would have happily played through the PA.
After missing some "opportunities of a lifetime", I was told by a good friend of mine to always carry my harps. After I started carrying harps, I've had the opportunity to jam and sit in with some great players.

As I start driving I always take with me bag with two softcases for 12+14 harmonicas + 3 chromatics + 5 harmonicas in my pockets (my main set) + Audix Firebal, XLR cable, impedance transformer. So it can be enough for most situations (spontaneous rehersal, jam, gig). When I play a planned gig I always take my amp (or even two) and pedalboard (see my profile for photos) and bunch of backup stuff (extra harps, mic, cables, mic stand, DC adapters, AC blocks etc)

Kingobad: "What's in your backpack of tricks Buddha?"
I want to take a stab at what's in the BuddhaPack.
1. A set of nunchuks.
2. A dusty, old, dog eared copy of "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.
3. His lucky Buddha Head Pez dispenser.
4. A complete set of custom Buddha Harps, in all keys, so radical in design, that the mere sight of them would melt the face of the onlooker (Indiana Jones style).
5. Get out of jail free card (good for one use only), signed by the Governor of Arizona.
6. Special custom dog whistle with cutting edge micro-amplifier that can be heard by his canines anywhere in a 5 mile radius.
7. GPS
8. Half eaten container of tic-tacs.
9. Crumpled up piece of paper with coded message (could be to or from Howard Levy).
10. $103.26(US) in Nepalese rupees and paisa.

I think you would be more surprised than you would think if/when you see Buddha's gigging harps. And not in the way that you are thinking. I'll let him divulge if he feels like it.

PS. Here in Arizona, after they privatized the jails, pretty much ANYONE can get a get out of jail free card. Apparently they let you just walk right out! ---------- --------------------------------------

I almost always carry at least one harp with me, in my pocket. Just got new jeans with a new harp length pocket on the leg. It should hold 3! (I want to sew a button on it so they don't fall out.) When I have my back pack with me (anytime I'm planning on being out for more than a couple hours at a time) I usually have several second string harps with me. I try to keep my first string harps in the case so I don't show up somewhere missing something important.
I have noticed that closed back harps travel better in a pocket than open backed harps. There is a lot less lint, but a good soft cover bag will fix that problem. Pick a harp with a good heavy cover so it doesn't get dinged or bent. If you don't bother with a bag keep your change and keys in one pocket and your harmonica in the other to minimize scratching and reed problems.
They aren't great sounding, but plastic covered harps are surprisingly durable and they don't clink nearly as much as metal harps do if you have more than one in the same pocket.
OT- Isaac, I was just reading about how much money the private jails were giving out to the anti-immigration groups. They were promising new prisons, even for immigrant children, to communities that would get on board. Scary as hell. Prisons and profit incentives should never mix.

@ upstate-extreme car temperatures + electronics=bad. Avoid leaving your mics, amps or even harps in the car during high heat/extreme cold if you can. ----------
