Perhaps I'm becoming a sissy, but some of the house mics are disgusting.
Anyone use his foam sanitizer ("Microphome")? http://homerecording.about.com/od/productreviews/gr/microphome_review.htm
Or any other methods?

That looks really good - hope I can get it in the UK. Every shitty dive of a rehearsal room I've used has mics that need this really badly.

Bill, if one of these house mics happens to be the vereable SM58, the windscreen assembly(with foam inside)unscrews easily, and new ones are available at most music stores. This is why I used to always carry my own vocal mics, or at least a windscreen for a '58 in my gig bag(Got ripped off one too many times and kinda gave in-now I just tolerate it). Nothing more nasty than smelling/tasting someone else's stale smoke, stale beer and god knows what else was on their breath/in their mouth.
That's a good tidea for the cleaner-unfortunately, I doubt most soundmen would take the time to do it. ----------

these slip-on foam windscreens are a cheap option you can carry around yourself, and it doesn't matter if it's a shure or not, as long as it's a ball-shapped mic ----------

Well, thank goodness they passed anti smoking laws here in Mass. I absolutely HATED the stench on cigarettes (I also have asthma, so I'm gonna be more sensitive about that stuff) and every night after a gig, especially in some really smokey clubs that just reeked bad, I almost always had to let my harp case air out overnight because everything in that case, along with my clothes all reeked of that crap. With a lot of drunk smokers, a lot of them can be quite indescriminate about how and where they flick the ashes of their butts and more than a few times I've seen in in my harp case and it took a lot for me NOT to kick the living crap out of them for doing that. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

keeping a windscreen in your gig bag is a good idea for another reason. to keep from getting shocked.
i play through an amp and sometimes if i'm holding my harp mic, the vocal mic will bite if i'm singing.
this is a bad wiring thing and sometimes happens in old buildings.
once i was getting bit and didn't have my screen and had to ask the kitchen for a rag to tie around the vocal mic.
i smelled kitchen grease the whole gig but at least i wasn't getting shocked. ---------- MP hibachi cook for the yakuza doctor of semiotics superhero emeritus

ah yes...zapped by bad grounding via microphone...I'm glad I'm not the only one who has had that unpleasant experience. What's worse than the actual shock is trying to not let the audience know you just got zapped, and using all your restraint to not start cursing involuntarily at the same time. ----------

Maybe that was Joe Cocker's secret, MP. Sure looked like he was being electrocuted. ----------

I gotta agree. This would get us kicked off the Joe Cocker forums, ya know.
On the subject of the foam sanitizer, I'm sure any player with a foam-lined case has the same funky stale smoke build-up in their case as I do in mine...ewww. I just had a defeatist moment, when I thought of the time I spend cleaning my harps, only to return them to that funky ol' case.

There is a show where they show all sorts of things in slow motion. They had Metallica on. They showed how much spit goes onto the mic when a singer is singing. They slobber more than a dog!
As for Joe Cocker, I bought one of his CD's once. I love his cover of With a Little Help from My Friends (which was why I bought the album). I didn't like anything else. It just wasn't my style.

One of the grunts at a local club carries a bottle of listerine in his hip pocket, and a small rag. He dips a dollop of listerine in the rag, thoroughly swabs the mic surface with it, and moves on. While whiskey is an amusing answer, it's only 40% alcohol - good luck killing germs with that. 70-90% does it, or does it better. and the Listerine (mint) is comparably less offensive, and immediately obvious that there's been a mic cleaned up.
