There's a thread started by Chris where he invites people to embed as much Youtube as they want, but I'm not convinced this is wise - it really seems to crash my computer.
Do other people have the same problem? If they do, is there some way we can control the way Youtube videos are embedded or the amount? I think it's possible that it's just the number that matters, e.g. we could limit it to half a dozen videos per thread? I don't know.
It seems to be maybe a cross between shafting my bandwidth and my flashplayer developing a serious fault and causing everything to run at 1/1000th of its normal speed. In fact I've got to reboot my PC now as a result of taking one quick peek at the offending thread. ---------- Andrew, gentleman of leisure, noodler extraordinaire.

Linking instead of embedding does the trick.
However you have to copy the address and get the html code, etc... and you don't have the player right there.. but as you say this amount of players on one page is just too much for many computers.
Gotta learn the html link code... :)

Yes posting links would make things faster. The problem would appear to be the response of the YouTube servers which need to send the previews for each clip. Until a user clicks a play button, no actual video data is streamed, just the previews. http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/showthread.php?t=20331 A thread full of YouTube clips should load in the same sort of time as one loaded with flickr hosted images. If the YouTube servers are very busy, page loading will take much longer.

Andrew,
Yes I just had the same problem after visiting that thread. I'm now sorry that I embedded a few tunes myself. I don't want to go back in and delete though, as just visiting that thread wreaks havoc with my computer.

Lol. Yeah, that thread is running a little slow. Still, assuming your computer doesn't crash it's a much faster way to view than opening a new link for every video... One possibility would be reviving the YouTube channel we used to use for challenges and using it to make channels for different purposes (favorite non-harp music, favorite harp music, favorite tutorials etc.) As for a single thread crashing your computer, you might try Google Chrome. It has a couple issues of it's own (like autoplaying lots of files) but it isolates each tab so instead of crashing your computer or browser it crashes just that single thread. (It's also unbelievably fast.)
Another way to deal with the problem would be for people to make a channel in YouTube on their own account for a post and give the link to that channel.
Either YouTube option would also have the advantage of letting you set it to autoplay and listen to a bunch of songs in a row without having to do any more clicking.

I can't get in there to even change it to a link... I think embedding was a real bad idea.... sorry for my part in it. ----------

I just checked out that thread, the whole thing loaded in about 40 seconds, quite a long time by modern standards, but not outrageous. Sometimes when the MacWebsiteBuilder's servers are slow even a completely text thread can take a while, this forum can get slow - I remember a few threads about that last year. However I do have pretty recent computer.
I think my initial theory about slow Youtube servers might not be the whole story. A little Googling has turned up an issue with the latest version of flash intensively hogging the CPU. If you are running the latest flash on an older single core processor you are going to have problems. My Macbook seems to cope OK, but I do notice the fan kicks in when running Flash based sites.
The only thing I can suggest to anyone having problems is to downgrade to an earlier version if you can get hold of an one.
Flash maxes out your CPU, which means everything else -browser included - grinds to a halt or a snailpaced crawl.

Yeah - just loaded the thread in question. My Activity Monitor showed Flash Player hovering between 25% and 50% of CPU usage and using 750Mb of real memory.
Steve Harvell's thread - with only 3 embedded videos - is about 5%, 95Mb
In this thread, with no video, it's down to 0.2% and 84Mb.

I just tried it in IE and it ran pretty slow. Chrome seems to be much faster.
edit: But IE seems to scroll smoother...
