Anyone else noticed this? Replacement Special 20 reedplates a short while ago were £12.95 from Harmonicas-Direct. Today I find they are £15.50. I have every faith in Peter, he's obviously passing on the price rises from his supplier. BooHoo :(

There was a big Hohner price jump in NA in early 2009 ... all following prices in Canadian dollars ... GM for instance, went from C$31 to 42 ... now 41 ... was quite a bit of discussion on HarpL at the time ...
Currently C$35 for a Sp20 ... 32.50 MB ...
Suzuki had no price jump and in fact, now are lower than last year by about ten percent ... Bluesmaster C$27 ... Harpmaster 22.50 ... Manji 45 ... Promaster 45.50
My current favourite is a Harpmaster I customised and circle tuned ... in June there was a promotion whereby key C Harpmasters were C$19 ... got a few to alter tune ...
Pricing and quality has definitely shifted me towards Suzuki ... also really like the profile of the Harpmaster as it has allowed me to finally learn to play pucker style ... as a lifelong tongue blocker, I find that pucker embouchure makes blow bends and overblows easy by comparison ... plus tongue articulation adds an added dimension ...

30 bucks is too much to pay for a Marine Band or Special 20. Might as well pay for a Deluxe or Crossover. or shop for another brand.

Bro's Ya Breaking my Heart:( $30 Bucks SP-20 Come Down my way
SP-20 $60 Pro Harp $70 MB $65 MB Delux $90 $95 Lee Oskar $65 Susuki Pro Master $85 $90
Prices went up 09 These Prices are counter prices if you walkin buy They will sting you:( you will get a discount on SP-20s or MB's you have to Haggle But every other harp above NA, no way won't budge,
as for other Brands what other Brands Delta what? Bushman Who? Seydel geeze thats a funny name, what!!!! Bloody Herring thats a fish ya goose, Haunge what?
Im Hard Core SP-20 Change Brands can't be done i now relize this, but am looking into setting up my Harps will start with simple Gapping i think thats all i realy need and some fancy combes maybe:) ---------- Change Brands! Change Brands!!! ARG!!#$%^&*&^%$#

Sonny Boy, cost of Crossover is C$69 and Deluxe is C$70 ... so 2x times the price of the MB and Sp20 ...
These prices are what encourage serious players to customize and to search out other brands.
Suzuki the best prices by far here. A Harpmaster at 22.50 that plays loud with good quality components, high tolerance reed plates, screws and solid covers pretty tough to beat for those interested in harp tweaking or a Manji at 45 ...
Interestingly, when Korean students visit NA, they often load up on harps as much cheaper here. Hohner 270 a popular buy ...
NOD ... the cost in Oz would certainly make one seriously interested in harp reconstitution! ...
In addition to gapping, try some light embossing on the lower 4 draw reeds ... go easy and just do the tip quarter of the slot ... you'll likely find this to be quite worthwhile in terms of ease of reed control ... if you're happy with the result, expand your efforts ... especially helpful on harps below key D ... The lower, the more helpful ...

Long gone are the days of the 70's when I could hit Manny's Musical Instruments for a MB for $3.54 each, and the price included both NYC as well as NY State sales taxes.
My mom used to tell me she remembered seeing them in the stores for $0.25 each back when she was a kid in the early 1930's. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

@Blues13
FYI for Canadians - options to buy in Canada on the internet if you don't have a local walk-in source etc.
http://www.musicianswebstore.com (Burlington, ON) and good old Long and Mcquade will sell you harmoncias online. Manji's are $45 CDN for example. SP20s are $35. Prices are better when our dollar is up, as it is now. Shipping is 8 bucks for one from MWS. Taxes are only 5% if you live outside Ontario so you would save there given that you are in Montreal. I have ordered from MWS and they are reliable. No affilation otherwise. Cheers.

.....This phenomenon, more than many others, proves the extreme devaluation of paper currencies like the Dollar and Pound. There aren't too many other products made in a very similar way from 1896-2010. It is the dollar going down; not harmonicas going up. If it weren't for inflation, harps might cost even less than in 1896 now that some mechanized production has been used.
In 1896, a "Marine Orchestra" harp was $4.73.....PER DOZEN - $.39! One could have bought about 50 for a little less than ounce of gold (US $20 gold coin). One can still buy about 36 for an ounce of gold ($1,200/$33. - gold is underpriced in dollars currently, IMHO)

@N.O.D, Those Auusie prices for harps really suck!!
Google "harponline". They sell individual reeds for MB's @1/2 a Euro each. These MB reeds fit the SP20.
If you have trouble using the old rivet drill out the reed and reedplate and use a 10 or 12ba screw and nut.
A little practice and patience and you will never have to buy another harp
