So I'm starting to explore with the half-valved diatonics. Is there anything else in that but just valving the draw holes 1-6 & blow holes 7-10 the same way it's done in the chromatics?

Yup, that's the main idea! Try using Ultrasuede for the valves. This is basically a thin "fake" suede cloth. It's used mainly for draperies or upholstery. If you go to a fabric store like Joanne's, go to the drapery section, and there will be displays of the material with little 5x5 inch swatches you are free to take home with you (ostensibly for you to match to your decor). Take them from each of the displays in every color. No one bothered me while I did this, but if a sales person happens to come by, pretend that you can't make up your mind about which color will best match your sofa. You can get enough material in one trip to last a lifetime. When you get home, cut out strips with an Xacto knife or with a wheel cutter. Affix them with superglue (it's harmless once dried). Make sure the "suede" side is down. I use the superglue that comes with a brush applicator. It's easier.

Ultrasuede is supposed to stick less, and not cause that buzzing noise that normal plastic or mylar windsavers do. PT cuts his just a half a millimeter short of the slot length. This is also supposed to keep the valve from sticking.

hey isaac!

ultrasuede sounds like a good idea for chromatics. sometimes i'll replace a buzzy windsaver(from my hohner stash) and the sucker still buzzes.

i have the first chro hohner made(circa 1924) and the windsavers on it fell apart. i think they were actually made of suede, but what do i know.

Thank's, the ultrasuede sounds like good material for this. However - like with other sucstances talked about this forum - finding that from Finland might be hard.. I mean I'm sure it is used here too, but probably under some different name and I'm not sure if I can find samples of it. But I'll check out few fabrics shop.

About the old chromatics. I think Elk (Dave Payne) said earlier when I showed some pictures of my pre-war octave harp that it has probably been valved originally and the valves would have been thin leather - so that's what you probably had on your chrome too MP.
