Alright, I went with the Natural Minor harp. Thanks to everyone who had a listen to the original couple of takes with just the vamp. Your comments certainly helped me figure out which way I wanted to go!

Let me know what you think of the song. I'm sure it can stand some cleaning up, and improvement, but I'm pleased with the take I was able to get this afternoon...

Hi Isaac,

Try out some more melodic tunes in some part of the tune. I played along with my nat-min G-harp and at least to my ears it sounds good if the melody develops throughout the song so that it becomes more of an continuous melody...

Thanks DirtyDeck! I hear you. It's kinda strange that I never have listened to a ton of hiphop in my life, but that my own songs all have a hiphop vibe to them! weird huh? I'm mainly an Indie Rock kind of guy, with forays into ska, reggae, punk, blues, deep country, and a little world music. The only hiphop I really like is Old Skool, "positive" hiphop like De La Soul, Diggible Planets, Arrested Development, etc., with a very few modern bands thrown in (Outkast, The Roots, etc.).

So, where does one find a "positive" rapper to play with? I wonder if ought to start going to poetry slams, or something like that?

It can be tougher to find a rapper to jam with because they basically use DJ's and sample just about everything, but there are exceptions, but you have to go out there and find them much like the way it was for white people to find black blues back in the 50's to early 70's. Just remember, think more rhythmically when backing them because that's also where the "rap phrasing" is, and that's typical of just about every single black music genre going and thinking too melodically all the time can actually get you more at odds with them and wind up stepping on things.

Thanks MP! Yeah, I suppose that adding the beat and chord progression definitely adds some vital context that was missing in the original two posts I made...

hey isaac!

sounds nice and dark, like a serious part in a movie, or like a tom waits song.

Thanks! Yeah, this is a darker one. Gotta love those minor tuned harps. They let you set up totally different chord progressions than you can do with only richter harps. I set up the chord progression by using sustained octaves of the root notes of the chords to imply the chord. The chord progression on this song is D, E, F, A, whereas on the same key richter harp the chord progression would be D, E, Gb, A. The difference in the feel of the song is HUGE between the two types of harps, just because of that one substituted chord. On a richter harp, this tune sounds all upbeat and countrified. VERY different!

BTW, I'm working on another dark, minor tune. It's 80% fleshed out, so look for another vid from me in the next few days! :)

yea that sounds cool, needs a good thump behind it some bass, boom sha boom sha boom, with a drumtrack and a little flow,No but really that was a cool vibe you got going,I dig harp with hip hop jamtracks i think its very suited for each other with the solid bottom end thats laid down it leave's alot of room for a harp to get funky.:-) g1 man

Cool stuff, Isaac. It kind of makes me think of Michael Franti and Spearhead. I would love the opportunity to jam with them sometime!

Poetry slams maybe the thing, also on the street, if y'all have a lot of buskers where you are, you might find a positive rapper, also if there are any rap jams in your area...

Thanks Hobostubs! I was trying something a little different on the beatbox this time. I was going for a bass guitar sound, rather than the kickdrum sound I usually use. I'm still working that one out. I have to reset my beatbox fx patch on my RP155 so that it comes a little cleaner and with a little heavier low end.

Thanks shanester! Spearhead is definitely one of the HipHop acts I like. I'm glad you are comparing me to them, but I'm definitely not worthy! :)
