Hi Nasty....I have a 585 Hi-Z and a couple of 515s also. I highly recommend both for harp. The 585 is pretty clean but you can get a good old dirty sound with good cupping. It's pretty loud too. The 515 is one of my favorite mics and you can pic these up quite cheap on ebay (that's why I have 2!!). Again this is a clean mic but not as clean as the 585 and you can get a really good dirty sound with just a little cupping.Sounds great through my little Fender champ. I don't know why more people don't use this mic as the sound is (to my ears) better than the 585. Again it is a loud mic. Last time I saw John O'Leary (great UK player) he told me he had bought one of these off Rharley (a mic builder who frequents this forum) and he was very pleased with it.
I would definetly recommend the 585 and especially the 515 to you Nasty. I've never tried the Sphere-o-dyne so can't comment on it. You can't really go wrong with most of the Shure Hi-z stick mics though.
Just wanted to add that the only negative thing about these mics is the leads. They are quite thin and tend to get in a bit of a mess if you don't look after them, they twist into shit. The 515 has an integral lead and the 585 is a screw on amphenol type. Not a huge problem and shouldn't put you off buying one. You can always fit a modern lead to each of them.

Nasty,
I just bought a Shure Spher-o-dyne 533A. Should receive it in a few days. I was told this is a very good stick Mic and lots of people think they are the best Dynamic stick mic out there. Like anything this is subjective and also depends on your amp. A mic can make a world of difference playing through an amp in regards to tone. You can then dial in the tone more by changing the tubes. I have Shure bullets and astatic Crystals and ceramics and also really like the EV 638. That is a killer Mic.
Bottom line is I think there are many variables when selecting a mic and then you can dial it in experimenting with a tube change as well.

Cotton used to use the 585's a lot when he was still using an amp all the time (he stopped dragging one around in late 1977 and the last time he used an amp regularly, it was an Acoustic 450 head into a Dual Showman cabinet with 2-15's) and he usually used the 585V with the volume control on it. I've seen Paul Oscher use a 515 during the 70's. I've got one that I rewired to use the screw on connector like the JT30's and 585's had. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

I've owned two sphere"o"dyne 533 sa mics and both were excellant mics, I'm just not a big fan of stick mics and eventually sold both. David Barrett speaks very highly of them at the Harmonica Masterclass website. Paul

howzit nasty,
i played a Shure Spere-o-dyne 533 from '83 to '85 and it is the best stick mic i've ever owned.
i think 545s and 585s are too thin for my taste. the spere-o-dyne has got some serious balls and midrange crunch. few stick mics have any cojones at all.
i gave it to a fellow player because he liked it so much and i started useing JT-30s.

@ Oisin,.. Yes,..the Shure 515 is an awesome mic an a lotta harp player shy away from this vocal mic ,. John O'leary ( UK's Original harp player for Savoy Brown 1965,.now with his band Sugarkane ) is a great harp player,. when I met him he only used the Shure 545 ( as he hung with Butterfield back in the day)
Took a lil' talkin to convince him that My Hotrodded 515 (Midnight Smoke) was the mic for him ,.hear tell he likes it more than his 545,..I also Rebuilt His SM57. Ya can't go wrong with any of the Shure stick mic's ,.some are clean,.some are mean an nasty,.some can be made to be mean an nasty !! Only way to find out is to try a couple different models. Here is a pic of John"s 515 <>

Nastyolddog,
Yes..I won that Mint pristine Mic. I think I got a great deal on it! That makes 10 mics for me. And I will be selling probably 5 in the near future. I found that with the amp I have If I want to play my hot Shure CM's then the amp likes a 5751 or a 12AT6 preamp tube. With my EV 638 dynamic, MC151, MC101's crystals the amp likes 12Ax7 tubes to sound nice. I learned alot experimenting and when you hear about all the discussions of the amps out there, One needs to really look at the mic and tubes in the amp. The tone can be changed a bunch and as you know tone is 80 percent or more the person playing. Of course there are still amp designs that acheive a dirtier or cleaner tone to start.

It is everything that people rave about it is true. I need to sell a few of my bullets. You can not go wrong with this mic if you get a decent one.

Nasty,
I am not selling all my bullets :) I like them also. Each Mic has it own slight different sound but I just accumulated to many Mics :) If I could keep them all I would. :) but looking to save for a Harp Gear DT for my next amp or something for about the 1k range. I promised my self to stop looking for any more Mics NOW. :) Let me know how you like yours when you get it.

I don't know of any You Tube videos off hand, but this is from when I saw him live during the 70's all the time. There's a long out of print book called simply enough "Blues" that was mainly a photo collection of tons of blues players including Muddy, Wolf, Cotton (when Matt Murphy was in the band), George Smith and many more that has tons of photos of Cotton using one.
The two albums I know for a fact that he recorded using one was 100% Cotton and HIgh Energy (which was oriented towards the Disco market back in 1976 when it came out), and his sound is NOT distorted, but clean, exactly as he had set it up live back then as the amp he used was also functioning as the PA for a lot gigs he was playing until by 1977, when he was playing at larger venues and no longer needed to drag anything besides himself and his harps. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

Nasty,
Good to hear...If you like the 533A, you will also like the EV 638 although I like the feel of the 533A in my hand. Feels so comfortable. Like I Mentiond each mic needs to be tested with each Amp to find the right combination. There is no one best Mic. I have a few real hot mics that feedback more, some that have abit more bass. Some with better punch. Depends on the situation.

@Nastyolddog. Cool! I hope you enjoy it. BTW, for blues CD's you can't find, I highly recommend going to http://www.bluebeatmusic.com, which is run by a very knowledgeable California blues DJ named Charlie Lange and that's usually the best place to find stuff. Tell Charlie I sent you.
I remember during the 70's I could buy a 533 brand new anywhere and a number of them came with a volume control much like the 585V. The 533 is a hotter mic because wheras a 585 has a cardioid (heart shaped) pickup pattern, a 533 has an omnidirectional pickup pattern, much like most bullet type mics and those mics tend to be hotter.
Some mics works better with different amps based on things from room acoustics to the actual impedances of both the mic as well as the amp. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte
