I've been lucky enough to study a bit of NLP and the thinking is the same. No failures, only oppportunites (i saw an advert for Burger King where they call them Whopportunities) and how picturing yourself as 'successful' is the largest part of the challenge in front of you.
We con our brains every minute of the day - the choice seems to be what you con it to believe.
Did Bashar have anything to do with the foundations of NLP?
I've never heard of this "Bashar" fellow. Why is he talking like that? I just saw another video of his and the accent changes to a much-more indian-like accent.
"The? more you enjoy the less you age" Until you die, then you realize you done got old.
---------- I could be bound by a nutshell and still count myself a king of infinite space
AFAIK, NLP grew out of work done by Bandler (a computer whizz) and Grindler (a structural linguist) in The Structure of Magic (Vols 1 & 2), wherein they (very crudely):
(a) built on Chomsky's ideas about generative grammar (how humans form an understanding of the world) to identify tendencies in people to omit, generalise and delete when forming mental representations,
(b) suggested that successful therapists of all schools tend to use very similar patterns of language, asking questions that help the patient become aware of these omissions, generalisations and deletions.
Curious, actually: it all came from a summer job Bandler (a genius for pattern recognition) had transcribing therapy sessions...
Jim, it's listed as off topic. I think every brand of philosophy comes up with the same ideas, only they don't know the word that other philosophers use to describe it, so they make up their own. I've had discussions with people with education backgrounds about meta-cognition. I've had discussions with literary De-constructionists. I've had discussions about religious and scientific epistemologies. The believe it and it will happen crowd comes in as many flavors as any other belief system. While I don't believe it's the be all end all solution, a positive outlook is a happier way to go through life, and can lead to positive outcomes.
At some point one of the diehards will point out that my failures in life are because I don't except the theory completely and I'll have to politely leave the conversation before my less positive attitude manifests itself in a tirade against Pollyannaism, but until that point I can peacefully coexist and recognize their right to use whatever signifiers they want to describe why a table is just a table because we call it a table.
By the way, the forum does have moderation. We are just fairly moderate moderators moderating only when we see immoderate remarks, and only then in moderation and only moderately modifying modifiers, in keeping with the Modern Blues Harp creed.
I once saw this movie called "The Music Man"....I know, I'm old. They used this thing called "the think system". It let all the kids in a high school band learn their instruments just by thinking about it. It worked pretty good in the movie. :-)
Joch, but then someone brought up Pool which starts with P which rhymes with T and that stands for Trouble. My dad was in a local production when I was a kid.
Ten or fifteen years ago, I stumbled upon lessons for trading futures contracts on commodities. THIS WAS MY TICKET!! I was going to be RICH!!
I started off doing quite well, making my own decisions, taking my broker's advice with a grain of salt. I had a large position in pork bellies at one point, and one day my broker called with the opinion that the market was going to reverse direction THAT DAY. I listened to him and reversed my position. To make a long story short, I ended up filing for bankruptcy.
OK. One mistake...Oh well. This futures thing was still the ticket. I KNEW it was the way to wealth. I KNEW IT WAS. There was no doubt in my mind. So as soon as I could, I started trading again. Every trade was a loss until my account was empty. Now I'm in no position to try again.
I ABSOLUTELY BELIEVED.....No, KNEW I was going to be rich. This "Believe, and it will happen" stuff is a big giant load of STINKING SHIT. We are not God. We cannot make things happen with our minds. All the thinking in the world cannot bring about results. It takes REAL THINGS to be done and to happen.
Try mowing your lawn with thought. Hell, try to run your mower with wishful thinking instead of gasoline.
If a psychopath believes he can fly, can he?

About Bashar (the 3rd embeded video at the beginning of this thread), his website says:
''Bashar is a multi-dimensional extra-terrestrial being who speaks through channel Darryl Anka from what we perceive as the future. Bashar explores a wide-range of subjects with great insight, humor and a profound understanding of how reality creation occurs!''
also, if you explore the site a bit further you will see he sells CDs, books, seminars, ...and personal phone consultations for 45 dollars (for 45 minutes).
So the real important question to me is not whether this is bullshit or not. The real question is, what the F**K does a ''multi-dimensional extra-terrestrial being from what we perceive as the future'' need our money so bad for?
I dig what the first two clips are saying and definitely am aligned with the power of belief. I owe everything of value regarding my personal fulfillment in life to my belief in something being possible.
I feel what is missing from that conversation, however is addressing the role of action and speaking to the "manifestation equation".
Just as we shape our embouchures to resonate and create an overblow to the proper pitch, so we shape our lives through conversation and action to resonate consistent with the possibility that we see and choose to "believe".
What really deserves a lot of research is the power of our word. That is truly our greatest currency, and without a powerful relationship to our word, we are greatly limited in what is possible.
Our word to ourselves and others.
We see a possibility. We speak and take actions consistent with that possibility. We enroll others in that possibility. Our world begins to resonate that possibility. We have what we saw possible.
If you believe something is possible, you just might endeavor to accomplish it. And you may or may not succeed. If you do not believe something is possible, you might endeavor to accomplish it, anyway, taking the risk. And you may or may not succeed. Whether or not you believe something is possible, the odds of it falling in your lap are very slim. Belief is nothing more than your intellectual and/or emotional assessment of a situation. It is not a magical force.
"If you do not believe something is possible, you should really look at why you are doing it."
You would only do it because a successful outcome, no matter how slim the odds are of sucess, would be of great enough value to warrant the effort/risk. (It would help to know the difference between "believing" something is impossible and "knowing" it is....And realizing that what you think you "know" could be wrong.)
"Many could benefit from raising the bar on what they believe is possible!"
Oh, GAWD, that is SO true!!

People who believe but still aren't any good are just considered delusional. Belief should be commensurate with reality. I don't mean that in a pessimistic way. It can be fun to try, even if you know you won't make it big.
Belief in itself does not create. However, if you have belief, your ACTIONS can create.
Ahhh, heck...Enuff of this stough. I believe this is going to be one of those threads where everybody just keaps repeeting themselves.

Person A believes and succeeds; person B believes and fails. Person A will write his memoirs; person B won't. And there you have what's known as a self-selecting sample. Next time there's a plane crash, you'll hear the survivors' stories, but you won't hear the fatalities' stories.
Basher Bashar seems like a bully. Does the concept of excitement even exist in Buddhism? I love my life, I'm so excited to find out what's going to happen next. Basher Bashar "that is BAAD, that is proof that you are unhappy. You will buy my course, you will give me money" "No, I'm not giving you money, you're a crook" Basher Bashar: "You have too much attachment to your money - that is BAAD, it is proof that you are unhappy in life, you will buy my course. You will give me money."
everybody has a hustle. I have no problem with anybody selling anything. I sell my CDs at my show. At least once a set, I ask people to buy my stuff.
A few years ago, actress Anne Heche was at one of my shows. She was wasted but came up to me and asked about a CD. I handed her one and she walked off. That pissed me off. I walked over to her table where there were 7-8 people almost all were drunk. I told her I needed $20 for the CD. Then some dude at the end of the table asked me if I knew who I was talking to. And I said "Yep and she of all people should understand what an artist needs to make a living." Then the girl sitting next her her, pulled out a $20 and gave it to me.
In the middle of the next set, the guy that confronted me put a $100 in my tip jar.
She was Ellen's girlfriend until she decided she was straight.
As for hustle, there is a difference between giving somebody something they will enjoy for a fair price and hustling someone with false promises and emotional guilt. When someone says give me your money, you are too attached to it ask them if it would be OK to give your money to a third party instead. If they are OK with it, then maybe they have found the secret to not being attached to money. Otherwise you are paying them for expertise in a field they don't have expertise in.
On the other hand, you need to be astute enough to know what's going to look good on your résumé (CV) and then do it cheap or for free. I was once asked to translate a book on the papyrology of the Hellenistic Legal system in Egypt from German into English. I calculated it would be 150 hours' work. The American professor offered me 2,000 usd because she mistakenly thought I was a student and wanted the money. I said, no, I work full time and this will cost me my whole summer and I want 6,000 usd. She didn't get back to me. Shame: it would have looked good on my résumé. On the other hand, I'm thinking 150 hours was probably an underestimate, so maybe I had a narrow escape.
almost exactly 10 years ago, I was with Howard Levy, getting ready to go on TV to play music for one of those morning shows.
Howard had been bitching about the green room accommodations how the coffee sucked and there were no pastries. So one of the station staff went out to get us Starbucks.
The staff person had just brought us coffee and Howard and I are standing waiting to go on. Just then MLB Pitcher Jim Palmer walks out of the studio and walks right into me and causes my hot coffee to spill all over my light colored shirt. The whole 20oz made it on my shirt!
Do you think that fucker apologized? Nope. He just looked at me up and down and then extended his hand, " Hi. I'm Jim Palmer" I looked at him straight in the eyes and said "I hate golfers"
He stammers..."Um no, I'm Jim Palmer, the baseball pitcher"
"Ha, I should have know you were a guy who likes to wear tights."
Then he gave me the finger.
I got his address from the producer who also thought he was an arrogant prick. I sent him the shirt and asked him to replace it. Of course I never heard from him. Fuck the money store guy. Fuck golf and Fuck baseball too.
