It was much requested... here it is: the MBH chat!
I thought it would be easiest to just meet up over skype. We created an account to host the jam and called it 'modernbluesharmonica'. So feel free to add it to your skype contacts.
The first jam will be held thursday evening at 7pm central time (mississippi) - nacoran was so kind to take on the hosting.
So everybody that wants to talk harp and hang out with his mbh buddies... welcome!
However, also if some people have some questions about how to do some html stuff and general questions to the forum, I think this would also be a nice place to resolve these.
And last I thought it would be nice to use the chat to help out the newbies to the harmonica community in general. So if you would like to have some harmonica stuff explained, stuff shown - thats the place. I know there are a couple of people with an huge amout of good informative bookmarks in their browser that can direct you to any information that you'd like to know about (ask nacoran ;)
... and even if some people want to pair off and have a little teaching session one on one I think that could be arranged too.
So I hope to see you there!

You don't need a webcam (I tried to get mine running, but it doesn't seem to work) - Just skype and a headset/mic.
I'm online right now so feel free to add the chat to your contacts. Then tomorrow evening you can just IM the chat (nacoran) so that he can add you to the conference call.

I think Mississippi in Central time, so for us Americans, it's 8 Eastern, 7 Central, 6 Mountain, 5 Pacific, although you could argue that both costs of America are left coast, and the politics in the middle are more to the right, but that would only confuse the issue.

Yeah, but MS is in the south--so it would be more lower to the right of center if only slightly--to put it in the most accurate terms possible. . .

I was asking around after the skype session and was turned on to this diddy http://ninjam.com/
*pasted from website* What is NINJAM? NINJAM is a program to allow people to make real music together via the Internet. Every participant can hear every other participant. Each user can also tweak their personal mix to his or her liking. NINJAM is cross-platform, with clients available for Mac OS X and Windows.
NINJAM uses compressed audio which allows it to work with any instrument or combination of instruments. You can sing, play a real piano, play a real saxophone, play a real guitar with whatever effects and guitar amplifier you want, anything. If your computer can record it, then you can jam with it (as opposed to MIDI-only systems that automatically preclude any kind of natural audio collaboration1).
Since the inherent latency of the Internet prevents true realtime synchronization of the jam2, and playing with latency is weird (and often uncomfortable), NINJAM provides a solution by making latency (and the weirdness) much longer.
Latency in NINJAM is measured in measures, and that's what makes it interesting.
The NINJAM client records and streams synchronized intervals of music between participants. Just as the interval finishes recording, it begins playing on everyone else's client. So when you play through an interval, you're playing along with the previous interval of everybody else, and they're playing along with your previous interval. If this sounds pretty bizarre, it sort of is, until you get used to it, then it becomes pretty natural. In many ways, it can be more forgiving than a normal jam, because mistakes propagate differently.
Part tool, part toy, NINJAM is designed with an emphasis on musical experimentation and expression.
How does NINJAM work? NINJAM uses OGG Vorbis audio compression to compress audio, then streams it to a NINJAM server, which can then stream it to the other people in your jam. This architecture requires a server with adequate bandwidth, but has no firewall or NAT issues. OGG Vorbis is utilized for its great low bitrate characteristics and performance. Each user receives a copy of other users audio streams, allowing for each user to adjust the mix to their liking, as well as remix later. This uses more bandwidth than having a server encode a single stream, but has numerous benefits (including lower server CPU use and the client having the full multichannel data for later use).
NINJAM can also save all of the original uncompressed source material, for doing full quality remixes after the jam. ----------

It was really cool to talk to people that play harp! I learned a lot, including how to over blow!
no sh!t all the vids on youtube didn't help me with anything but a squeal trying to OB, but talking with you guys for an hour did the trick! I finally got a few good OBs tonight with the advice GH said about blow bends and what MAL said about not forcing it and playing soft. Thanks guys!

DJKim, I thought I'd just start hosting the jam at about 9pm european time, so that people from the UK don't have to pull an all nighter :). Of course the US chat will still be around 7pm - or whenever you feel like joining.
CaptainBolide, I've tried ninjam. It was pretty cool, however it is exclusively for jamming, and it really only makes sense if you have a backing guitar and base or drums - only lead instruments... no.
As far as I know you fix a certain loop interval (mostly one or two beats), the guitar starts playing, and the other people play the accompagnement one interval later, and the guitarist hears it again an interval later. So there isn't really any communitcation and the groove has to be pretty constant, so that it all fits...
earlounge, great! ---------- YT - Music isn't created, it evolves.

I had a good time. I didn't expect the audio to be as good as it was. I came a little late to the party. Who was the guy doing that great Sonny Terry stuff? It would be nice to move the time up so the many Europeans we have here don't have to be night owls.

We had a funny problem when different people tried talking at once without visual cues. Everyone was really polite and stopped talking, and then there would be a pause, and everyone would start talking again! There is a running instant message screen underneath too, so we could listen to someone jam and still communicate underneath without interrupting.
I think I saw something that said there could be up to 24 people in a conversation. We peaked at about half that. As more people get this figured out if we hit that limit we'll have to figure out what to do. Theoretically we can do video too, but aside from a brief moment when DevonTom's camera got turned on no one was doing video last night and I think Tom's camera got activated by accident.
I think I also made Paul king of the chat by pressing button. I don't think I could do it again if I tried, although I should probably figure that out in case people want to keep chatting after hosts' bedtimes.
We had a couple people with no microphones chime in just by text. ---------- Nate Facebook

Sorry I couldn't be there for this one. Sounds like it was a good one! I'll try to make the next one if it's at all possible.
One thing we might try is ooVoo, which lets you do up to six Video feeds at once. That way, we could see AND talk to eachother, which would be pretty cool... Probabaly would need a healthy bit a of bandwidth to get all the video feeds coming in at once, though.... ---------- ------------------

Yeah, learned quite a bit from talking with those who were there. We gotta do more jamming on that thing though. I love to hear people's different approaches to playing when it's live and how my playing affects what the next person plays or how what I play is affected. Great fun!

Tuck, I wonder if maybe that was because Skype assumed you knew you were in the conversation? I couldn't see the MBH log in in the list either. Then when you logged out it showed you the list of who was in the conversation like you weren't there, only for a moment you still were, so there you were. Or at least that's my guess. :)
