If you ever decide to play it, be sure you're up to date with your tetanus vaccine! (They are only good for 10 years)

I was going to bid for this harp too as I'd like an old marine band. According to the seller it doesn't have the ragged sleeves of the really old ones but plays ok. I'd recommend you clean it up thoroughly if you want to play it though!!

I paid $42.00 (Canadian dollars) total.

Here is the proper link

To be honest, I wasn't very serious when I put in my bid - I thought it would go for much more. Not that I'm not happy - I can't imagine all the music that has been made since that harp was first made.

I'm jealous as hell--I'd love to get hold of an old mouse ears MB--Fix it up a bit and make it a great harp!

And you got it for a great price! Well done!

I won two Shure 57's yesterday for ten dollars! Of course they're both broken in half--I'm just hoping the guts of them are still salvageable.

I like ebay shit a lot--very fun. . .

That's an early 1900's Marine Band and those were, for many years, the loudest stock MB ever. I have one that was given to me that was in almost brand new condition including the paper box with the attached photo of an 1896 US Marine Band on it. Still plays unbelievable.

that is a totally cool harp!!! i have one just like it in D and after some cleaning and tuning etc.. i gig with it.
i know a few guys who collect those (mouse ear) harps and have never come across a bad one. brass is pretty resilient. they have a smooooooth chordal sound and make me a better person...someone good.
don't sell it. GIVE IT TO HARPWRENCH TO MAKE IT PLAYABLE. then keep it and play it...it is historical.

I bought this on impulse, really. I'm happy to have held it and played it. But I think someone else should have it.

It is historical which is why I want to pass it on to someone who can appreciate it more than myself.

That's got the old, very HIGHLY prized bell metal brass, which hasn't been made since prior to WWII. It was a soft, but very strong and durable brass and the tone was just unbelievable. There used to be as many as 500 different grades of brass and less than half of them are still being made, most of them not very good for reed material and for harp companies, the choices are getting smaller and smaller, and it's too bad none of them ever bothered to have their own brass factories where they could carefully control the manufacture of it, as does some cymbol manufacturers like Ziljian.

All of those harps have a smooth chordal sound because they are all tuned to 7 limit Just Intonation.
