Hey guys. Some of us have been working on a Blues Portal (GH and Boris) on Wikipedia, but the wiki mods are getting impatient and keep threatening to delete us. We need to get more information up. If you guys are interested, pick a part of the portal and let us know. Leave a comment in this thread that you want to help so we can coordinate our efforts. I've got links on the portal to some of the articles that are already out there but we'll need more if we want to save the blues.
edit: Here is the link Blues Portal

Nate...how do I leave a message on Wiki to stop them deleting it? I think the portal is a great idea.

Here is the link to the page where they discuss deletion. The more complete and the useful the portal is the less likely it is to get deleted.

Hi nacoran, boris, I thought a little about the portal in the last couple of days: What do we actually want to achieve, what do we want to make availble with the portal? Wikipedia is a collection of information. However, the thing that IMO would be the best to make available is something that shows and links all the information on the net. Not actually rewrite it all. It should IMO be a place which introduces you to the wealth of information on the diatonic harmonica that you can find on the net (that has accumulated in the forums, etc.) - a place to gather and sort it all.
...and I'm not quite sure if wikipedia is the right place for that. I looked around a little bit and a wiki like wikibooks seemed somehow more appropriate.
Which of course doesn't mean that we shouldn't make as much use of wikipedia as possible. If it easier to just add a little information to an existing wikipeida article then that can be done.
As far as I think it wouldn't be too much effort to transfer it now (gotta ask boris). If there were a better location to start this wiki we should identify it before it becomes too laborious of an undertaking.
Another thing which I think would be good is to define some kind of 'mission statement' IMO, stating somehting like: 'A place to gather all the online information related to blues harp.' so that everybody is on the same page.
And then we list all the information that we want to make available through this portal. This will give a good place as overview and a place form which to organise, as some kindo of to-do list.
Something like this...
----------- Harps -all models --fotos, measurements, materials, specifics, available keys and layouts, tunings,.... --history (of each model), deveopment in quality, tuning,... --differences of harmonica markets -manufacturers --production methods, materials used, development... etc --history of each company, production & the instrument.
Harmonica Community Worldwide -online --all forums, mailinglists (descriptions) --features of other websites (maps, chatrooms, lists of teachers, list of local groups,...) --online competitions, contests -offline --events, meetings, (all over the world) ->International section: german, french, russian, dutch.
Main Single Sources of information: -archives (harp-l, bushman search, mbh) -websites (overblow.com, patmissin.com, harmonicasessions.com) ->links, overview. ->International section: german, french, russian, dutch.
Harmonica Techniques -embouchure -bends -effects -...
Gear -Amps -Mics -...
Music Theory -Positions, Scales -Theory taylered to instrument
Tabs and Backing Tracks -List of resources, descriptions
Teaching Harmonica -tricks, tips -resources
Customizing & Repair -tuning -gapping -embossing -replacing nails with screws -replacing reeds -opening up cover plates -sanding -others (tip scooping,...) -DIY comb (tricks, techniques, materials) -tools, tool sets (which ones are there, what alternatives can be used)
customizers / Custom harps (worldwide...) -description of their work, photos, reviews.
Restoring Old/Used Harmonicas -Cleaning, ... -Removing rust
Harmonica Care -Cleaning tips, vids,... -Cleaning minor rust -Dealing with minor problems (removing hair,..)
Online YT Teachers -Adam Gussow --each lesson (title, description, excercises?) -Jason Ricci --overview lessons (description) -jpallen7, Ronnie Shellist, ...
Online Learning Sites/Lesson -Adams's Lessons -Howard Levy -etc...
Harmonica Physics & Research -how the harmonica works (resources) -papers on the topic -vids, animations, studies (YT, etc.)
Gadgets and Accesssoirs -Harpbelts -harp boxes, pockets and cases -
Playing Out, Busking, Dealing with Band, Becoming a pro Musician -Tips, tricks, ideas,...
Harp Musicians -What harps did/do they play, what kind of music, biographies -Influences... -Development of the Instrument / playing styles
-------
I think the most efficient approach to this wiki-project wouldn't be to write a wikipedia-style article for each and every of these articles (at the end there will be a deletion notice on all of our stubs.. ;). Rather just add a couple of links with 'the most important sources concerning this topic are:...'. Then if somebody feels like it he can add his own information.
And all this in an environment that is not too regulated and where we have some freedom of action.

GH- Yeah, I ran into having a stub deleted. I've been trying to find all the information that is already out there and link it together. I've added links to the wiki articles for a lot of harpists. I am still really struggling with any formating though.
I've also been working on an article about types of harmonicas. So far I've been just describing the shapes and materials. They seem to be a little delete happy. I was hoping we could just plug away at it and add stuff bit by bit. I've also been working on describing different techniques and effect but I'm not very far on it.
I've keeping everything in one big file. Here is a link.
Drop Box File
I've been making sure I keep a copy at least of the portal page. I still haven't pasted all my bookmarks in! :)
I've tried to catch you on Skype but between forgetting to turn it on and the time difference I haven't seen you on.
The only problem with putting the information somewhere other than Wikipedia is it will make it harder for new people to find it.

Hey guys, there is already a fairly substantial wikibook on harmonica. Not sure how this would tie in to a giant portal, which is also a noble venture. The problem with portals is that they point to material that may disappear at some point.

Cool. Maybe we could work with those guys. They have a good amount of info. I can see some things I'd like to add there. There really is a lot of stuff on the web, it's just scattered in a million places.

Yeah, I like wikibooks better too. And besides having more content, it coule be that they are a little relaxter than the wikipedia guys too.
