So the quintessential question is: Who's the harp player playing. To these ears that snippet of playing sounds "perfect" tonally and "big"!

p.s. So I'm in the back (dressing room area) of the "Bottom Line" in NYC and I'm a kid- I used to always sneak into the back between shows. There's Muddy sitting there with Victoria Spivey (I won't go into her bio now) and she asks me for some "sugar". Muddy- all grandfather like and laughing at my innocence- tells me: she wants a kiss and then grabs me and sits me on his lap laughing. Mine was the face of a saint beholding his God that evening. He- at least on that particular night (with Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, and Danny Russo in the audience) was very generous and totally non-pretentious that night. d

As for the amped harp on that first cut, who knows? My guess is "maybe" Portnoy or Hummel because it sounds very precise, but it's such a short excerpt I'll bet I'm wrong.

I dont think its either of those guys, the tone phrasing doent sound exactly right and the choice of licks both portnoy and hummel play more traditional. they might have redid the music with a more modern harp player.

Has this movie been released...some trailers are from 08, some from 10. Maybe a limited release?

Interesting. I did not know this was actually made.

I know I'm being greedy and should accept what we got; but I can't help be disappointed that Jeffrey Wright did not reprise his role -- one that he fookin' owned in "Cadillac Records".

tell me this isn't Muddy Waters:

Robert Randolph as Bo Diddley! Very interesting... It looks to be focusing on a completely different part of the Chess story than did Cadillac records. All quibbles about historical accuracy aside, it should be interesting to watch the two movies back to back and compare them stylistically and for content...

I agree it's not likely to be them. It lacks Portnoy's vibrato for a start. I don't think it's non-traditional though. What it is, is so precise that it sounds like some studio cat. That's why you get the feeling it's not of the era.

It may be someone we know, but they aren't relaxing and doing their own thing. I'm a huge fan of Kim Wilson, but I didn't think his take on Juke for Cadillac Records was his best ever work. It was better than 95% of harp players, but it wasn't Kim being Kim.

The new movie seems kinda pointless to me, maybe i'm being a bit harsh but there was a movie about essentially the same thing not 2 or 3 years ago. I mean there should be a limit on biopics, or at least a sizable gap in between production otherwise it just seems like a competition. I think Cadillac Records is a brilliant film and the actors chosen were perfect. Not that I won't see this new film and most likely like it...but you know what I mean.

i thought the "MUDDY" in CADDILAC RECORDS was made to look like a stooge of the wierd leonard chess character.
as a kid, i snuck in to see MUDDY 6 times. couldn't get enough!
the MUDDY i saw didn't look like anyones fool.
i thought the WOLF character was pretty good.
beyonce had odd phrasing. etta should have sung ettas parts.

Remember, this is still a Hollywood movie and if you think everything is gonna be historically and factually perfect and true, think again!!! The only way you're gonna have that is something made by Ken Burns and it would only be shown on PBS and wouldn't br any kind of a money maker, and that's the reality.

This movie had its debut playing at the Toronto Film Festival in 2008. I was lucky enough to be invited by our rhythym guitar player to its opening night.

Marshall Chess was present at the debut to recognize Jerry as the ideal producer to front this project and of course to pay homage to his father Leonard Chess, however I think that Cadillac Records movie took the edge when it was released first in 2008 to the public.

This is an excellent movie and I receommend that you go and see it.

Personally I think that the music was right on and the period portrayal was good. While Muddy and Willie Dixon and Little Walter were quite important to the movie and the history of Chess it was truly about the trials, tribulations and desires of Leonard Chess.

Interstingly, until this movie I did not have any idea they started out in the auto wrecking business.

Jerry Zaks directed it.

Who Do You Love Jerry Zaks, USA
World Premiere
Alessandro Nivola stars as legendary record producer Leonard Chess in Who Do You Love. Founded by Leonard and his brother Phil, the label helped to introduce and popularize blues music during the 1950s and 1960s, including that of the extraordinary Muddy Waters. As the music around them transformed, so too did their family lives – Who Do You Love explores the professional success and personal sacrifices of the men behind what would come to be known as America’s greatest blues label. Who Do You Love is presented by Alexander/Mitchell Productions.

Following its acclaimed premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, Who Do You Love - the new film from four-time Tony Award-winner Jerry Zaks (Marvin's Room) - will open in theaters beginning in April 2010.

The film, which presents an intimate look into the lives of Leonard and Phil Chess, legendary founders of Chess Records, stars Alessandro Nivola (Coco Avant Chanel, Junebug), Jon Abrahams (Meet The Parents), acclaimed musicians Robert Randolph (as Bo Diddley), Keb' Mo', Raheem DeVaughn and Ryan Shaw, David Oyelowo (Last King Of Scotland), Chi McBride (Pushing Daisies, Boston Legal), Megalyn Ann Echikunwoke and Marika Dominczyk.

The film features authentic musical performances and a score steeped in hits from the Chess Records canon including Muddy Waters' "Stuff You Gotta Watch," Etta James' "At Last," and Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love."

There can never be too many movies about Muddy Waters if you ask me. I can't wait to see it, especially if Paul Oscher is playing some of those harmonica parts.

The guy on the picture doesn't look like Muddy, but he'd be perfect for playing Little Richard.

I guess we can find a lot of things that are "wrong" in "Who Do You Love" but remember that "Crossroads" was the most popular blues movie before Cadillac Recods. I think we have made a giant step forward.

The movie has been released (very limited release) here in L.A.
The last sentence in a local revue:
"Because it arrived over the airwaves, early rock, from doo-wop, to Elvis Presley, to the blues, had the miraculous quality of seeming to emanate from a mysterious source; the original grooves are sacred."
