I've heard a great deal about this new creation of Honer. My russian comrads think it's not worthy. They see now real difference between crossover and DeLue, except for the bamboo comb and the outstanding high price. But I suppose one can just buy single crossover because of it's comb to change the reedplates with simular DeLuxe as the reeds get broken. And I would like to ask those participating the forum wether it makes any sence. I've heared, the sound of crossover was very good partly because of it's seeled comb and wide open stainless steel covers. I've only played for 4 month by now with no outstanding success and I've tried nothing but Marine Band Classic and Golden Melody. And the first of them was certainly better for me. I like it's bright loud sound. But the comb seems to swell already. And I've heared DeLuxe has the same problem. How long is the new bamboo comb going to last?

Tha Bamboo Comb is water proof and does not swell up like the old combs.

I have tried all MB's and they all are great harps once you have done a bit of reed work on them so I think you would be ok to buy a Crossover.

The Delux is sealed aroun dthe edges only so has the potential to swell.

You could always learn to seal the combs yourself and not bother with the Bamboo ones then you would have the satisfaction of doing your own harps instaed of paying the extra price for something IMHO that should be standard in the first place.

Thanks.;)
I know, that there are ways of improving harmonicas. But I have no intention of becomming a professional harper. I just play arrown for my pleasure only wich is not too often. So I guess a good harp might last quite long in my hands, so I can afford to buy a really good one once even for some extra mony to spare the mony for those harmonicas I can break while learning to customise them properly

The other similar Hohner harp is the Special 20. It has plastic combs, so it won't swell. It's cheaper than a MB Deluxe or Crossover.

I got a G Crossover two weeks ago. The coverplates are definitely different from the *older* Marine Band Deluxe coverplates I have here: the Crossover plates are taller (1-2 mm overall @ the mouthpiece), the side openings are larger, and those things will make it sound brighter and louder. I don't know if they are putting the same style of covers on Deluxes now. But it is not just the comb that is different from the older Deluxe.

My Crossover was a very good harmonica on arrival, perfect to learn on--superb bending accuracy, I mean, though *mine* was gapped too wide overall for any reliable overbends except an excellent 6OB. It was performance very comparable to the prewar Hohners I have played. If you want to talk about the price difference, all I can say is that my Crossover arrived gapped and tuned quite well, very comparable to good first-stage customizing, or a good prewar MB (see above performance description). I can't be 100% sure that all the Crossovers are going to be like that, not until we have seen a lot more of them. YMMV.

The bamboo comb is a laminated composite, not simply sealed near the tips like the Deluxe, so it ought to last indefinitely, and it definitely preserves what I can only call the "intimacy" of Marine Bands, where you do not feel isolated or insulated from what the reeds are doing. That is also a big advantage for learning purposes.

I wonder if they're using deeper covers for lower harps like the G, anyone else have other keys to compare?

I've compared my C, D, and Bb, and found them to be identical. (Don't have any lower keys to check yet)

Crossover pros: loud, bright, easy to play, very responsive to changes in tone / attack.

Crossover cons: haven't found any yet.

BeginnerHarp asks: "how long is the new bamboo comb going to last?" Can't say yet! But it looks pretty durable. I'm no expert, but I think bamboo is pretty hard wearing, isn't it?

LeonStagg writes: "I've compared my C, D, and Bb, and found them to be identical. (Don't have any lower keys to check yet)" Comparing a C to G, there is no difference in coverplate depth. I don't experience any problem with reeds clacking on the G, though, even when I draw hard.

Verdict so far: great out-of-the-box harmonicas.

BeginnerHarp. i have some crossovers and have tried a MANJI. both are very good harps, very, very, responsive, and loud. i prefer the crossover. that could be because i'm not big on suzukis. even so, the MANJI is a good harp. i think most any harp is good for those music styles.

That bamboo's gonna be tough stuff. We've got kitchen utensils made from bamboo that have been through the dishwasher a gazillion times. Let's just say that comb will outlast the rest of the harmonica.

That said, the plastic Manji will outlast mankind.

If you're like me, and a lot of other folks, you'll try several over time. Just pull the trigger on one and see what happens.

The problem is that I just can't afford to pull the trigger on and on, as I don't have enough mony for that.So I am to choose one harmonica to try. That's why I'm asking you.:)

I've heared about Manji, that it's reeds are fixed tightly so you can't replace them, and the covers are too thin and anyone can smash tham with his fingers only while playing. On the other hand it's sound is fabulas as I could judge after watching several videos on You Tube.

Sorry -- didn't mean to imply you should/could just buy a bunch and see what works. I think both are very nice harps. If you like the tone on the Marine Band you have, maybe just spend the extra money and get the Crossover.

Manji is a nice instrument too though, and cheaper. I think the flexibility of the cover plates is overstated. Carry it in the nice case it comes in, and don't squeeze down hard enough to damage it.

I guess, crossover is worth it's extra mony.So I might really choose it. I really like my classic marine band. And if crossover sounds even better there's no reason I shouldn't like it.

Got a C a G and a Bb. F and Ab on the way. All awesome. These are my new non custom harp. Great attck OB right out of the box on 5 and 6 (lip purse only) nice rich chords. Great for TB- comfortable on the lips. Screwed on covers. Bright tone, especially nice and loud acoustic. The only con is the tuning on holes 7-10, but as a beginner i dont think you'll be too bothered! Get one! They destroy the Manji, the 1847 and other standard hohners. .

And what's wrong about 7-10?
And by the way is the difference between B and Bb markable? If I use the same tabs whie playing B harp am I going to feel any real difference, while playing on Bb.Is a half-tone difference important?

First I got C and I loved it! But last week I got D and after few hours playing, 5th hole inhale sound starts bit late. MarineBands just go out of tune but this is something new...
