been customizing for about a year. it seems i'm operating under the (not quite false)assumption that i know what i'm doing. well, here's the deal.
i sealed the comb, embossed, arched, and gapped the reeds on a marine band deluxe in the key of D. bugger is outrageous except for two things. #2 hole draw has three bends, just like the #3 draw. it goes A,G#,G, like normal and then F#!! it makes a strange overtone sound when it hits F#. the blow #2 is an F# and i'm confused. after i made sure both blow and draw reeds were aligned and not touching the sides of the slot, i took a tack hammer and nail set to the rivets in case of a faulty rivet job. as long as i don't bend past G it sounds fine. i need almost no air to achieve this. but once i floor it(minimal or lots of air and good embouchure) it get this ringing overtone. any ideas??? would appreciate it. thanks.

hey thats great if you can do that, but you shouldnt be getting an overtone sound. it is possible to bend 2 draw down to the same note as 2blow. either your chops really got good or you found a way to adjust the reed to make that an easier move. this is a particularly useful bend in fifth position like on a C harp instead of using 2 blow as the tonic you use 2hole 3rd bend to E and play in Em. btw i cant do this anymore, but i did do it and i know its possible

I've run across that on a number of different harps. Most of the time, it's a gapping issue, but often times the reed plates may need to be realigned so that the two reeds in that hole more properly mate up and even 1/10K of an inch off can be quite a difference.

The only good thing about hearing that is that it's telling you you're bending all the way past the floor of the bend, often using too much breath force in the process.

so how did you get rid of it, fooling with the gapping?

MP has no idea how he fixed the overtone...NOT!!!!!!
(he found a tiny burr at the top of #2 blow slot)
It must be noted,.. he achieves the F# with absolutely minimum air pressure.
MP trusts BBquebobs input, and will adjust reed plates and gapping to see if F# goes away. MP told me the alignment on MBDs is often a little off.
I'd also like to add, MP went surfing....after we discussed these posts. BTW, he tunes all of my harps, and most all other harp players in Honolulu, too.

BBQB, I remember you bringing it up... What did you say was the effect of bad alignment... the bends/obs squeeling?
And, is it that most ootb harps are very well aligned (when they don't squeel), or that only some (degrees of) misalignments cause problems?

Even on a regular harp the bend will go down more than the note that is supposed to be there. Of course, it's more a little bit and not a dramatic change. An intonation issue.

hey guys, south shore swell with 7' faces. at 63 lopez is still shredding. i see mojokane took my place.
well, alingned plates, re-gapped, removed a burr;-overtone noise,-, and now i don't get the F# unless i want it and i don't. what fixed it? i think re-alignement of the reed plates. thanks BBQ. you are a cornucopia of knowledge.
