Hello folks,
Just added 2 tracks from Ataturk Band's new album to our MySpace.
Rock Me, Nebuchadnezzar features my beatboxing and harp (separate takes) and a Turkish lute used in very unorthodox way.
Tango Mesopotamia is, well, everything but tango I guess, but has the Seydel Low Low F harp in the beginning, and some emotional harp passages, too.
Check 'em out!

I love my LLF. I listened to Tango. Really cool. I'll listen to the rest later, but it's 3 am so I think I'm off to bed.

Holy Shit J-sin. That shit was BOMB! I've said it before when you first posted over here, and I'll say it again now: THIS is where I see the future of harmonica music. Your music fits in with the ethos and direction of the Indie music scene. You are inspire by music of the past and of different cultures, but you don't just copy them. You acquire them, collect them together, mix them about, and then create something new from them. It's just great. I'm still a solo "garage" player, but I aspire to have a sound like this. I've been trying to do it in a "solo" format with looping, beatbox, and effects. If you ever get the chance to head over to my YouTube channel, I'd love to hear your opinion on my efforts. The link is in my signature below!

Nice stuff, not sure where the "cock rock" comes from, not at all related to what I heard, but nice music nonetheless

Isaacullah, Thank you for your encouraging words -- really, it means a lot to me to occasionally hear I'm going to the right direction. Or any direction for that matter. This instrument seriously needs new approaches, and still it has to emerge from one's personal passions, in my case world music.
I'm going more and more solo, although I haven't solved my relationship with looping for example. I just love playing live, and usually prefer also my beatboxing more organic, not just a 4 bar loop. I'll have to overcome this attitude problem as I know it's possible to create wonderful music with looping devices. It just requires work, as does everything else, to get it sound natural.
I'm familiar with your channel, and have been watching your videos. What I really like is your genuine enthusiasm, experimental approaches and DIY attitude. Why settle for something that is given to you, when you can try and build for yourself? I wish I had the patience and the time to learn basic electronics... I don't even have the patience to learn true customizing, which would probably be helpful someday. I just regap and emboss a bit.
What also warms my heart is to meet other anthropologists. I'm studying folklore myself, and this blues/world music thing I have is heavily entwined with my studies. Hopefully I'm going exchange to Turkey next fall to learn on the spot.
I subscribed to your channel. Keep it up!
J
PS. @Walterharp: I just use some random, catchy words to describe our music, since I don't really know what it is. Welcome to our Laser-Klezmer-Riot-Blues -record release tour in Finland :D

J-Sin, I didn't know you were a fellow anthropologist too! It seems then, that we are kindred spirits in more than one way! :) Thanks for your comments respecting my YouTube stuff, I appreciate it, and I'm glad to know you have seen what I'm doing. The point of all this forum/YouTube/blog stuff is (to me) to connect with fellow musicians and scholars like yourself. To exchange ideas, to encourage each other, and to get inspired.
It's cool that you are doing ethnomusicology. I've been fascinated with that discipline myself for some time now. Ever since I first read Paul Bowles' "Their Heads are Green and Their Hands Are Blue". I've spent a lot of time traveling about the Near East and North Africa as an archaeologist, and have the fortune to have had many cool musical experiences on those travels, so your particular brand of fusion really resonates with me. I hope you do get to go abroad to study in Turkey. It will be a fantastic opportunity! Actually, I'm considering to work in Turkey in the near future. After I finish the PhD, that is! It has a lot going for it both in terms of the archaeology there, but also because it's a nice place to work! Probably a lot nicer to work in than Jordan. :)
Anyway, keep up the good work, and I'll look forward to hearing what you do next! ---------- ------------------

Really cool stuff. Is that the harmonic minor scale your using on some of the cuts?

I can warmly recommend this record. When I put it on my CD-player I got lucky within the first few songs - that's something I can't say about a many of my harmonica records.. ;)
