Almost the same harps. Crossover overpriced.
I like regular MB reeds much than deluxe/crossover (although my harp of chioce is Golden Melody).

They have all the same reeds, regular MB, MBDL, Crossover and Golden Melody. Same slot dimensions, same plate thickness, same reed material, same reed profiles, same box where the reeds are taken out to be nailed onto the plates. Well, what astonishes me most about all that is,

I will not buy a MB other than the regular MB. For about $2 I can set it up to destroy the other versions. Screws, sealed comb, flat sanded, etc. That doesn't even take into account reedwork.

How come the MBDs play better than the MBs? You never get a weak 3 draw on an MBD but you'll get one on an MB out of the box.

Mike, all custom work do on your harps consumes time and requires tools. Time is money, tools cost money. Even though i already have the tools i mostly don't have the time to do make the 1896 into what i want it to, and buying a MBDL is a cheap alternative then ;)

Bazzzzou - This guy has a full set of videos talking you through on assembling the Marine Band with screws. http://www.youtube.com/user/proveit#p/u

Also check out Joe Spiers stellar videos on gapping. Plus Chris Michalek and Dave Payne for videos on embossing. All of them are on YouTube.

These will tell you everything you need to know to start customising your own harmonicas.

i have 2 crossovers and 2 deluxes and they are great harps(did i just wind up with good ones?). i also customize 1896s and other models. if you seal the deluxe comb and adjust the reeds, maybe emboss-you don't have to bother with a lot of busy work. i notice the deluxe combs don't have big saw marks like the 1896s. the crossovers i have are outrageous and iv'e played everything from filiskos to sleighs to jimmy gordons to rupert oyslers. there is a lot of satisfaction in doing an 1896 though. i like all versions of the MB.

Last set of harps I went for were Deluxes. I have built up quite a few MB's, but same as MP, I just thought it was worth the extre $15 or so to get em screwed together. I still sanded em, sealed and gapped em. I thought the Xover a bit pricey though.

Pimpinella,

You can do enough reedwork on a MB in less than 30min to make it play much better than almost any stock harp.

bazzzou,

I have been very fortunate to learn how to set up harps at a very high custom level, but in return have chosen to not share secrets of the trade as a sign of respect. 99% of what I've learned has been available to the public via book, DVD, or net. The other 1% has come from asking why questions and asking for clarification of techniques from a couple of top tier customizers.

For most players, especially those that just want a more consistent harp, it really doesn't take very long to tweak. I am a husband, father, full time worker, grad student, and band member (50-75 shows a year for the last five years), and I find time to get it done.

The Crossover offers me nothing I can't do on my own for half the cost. If I can't find time to work on harps anymore, all my harp money would go towards Buddha's lowest priced harp model. It is similar to the price of the Crossover but plays much, much better.

If I didn't overblow, maybe it'd be different.

Mike, yes, i was not referring to reedwork though, but to replacing nails with screws, sanding and sealing the comb amd such.
The deluxes require reedwork as much as the 1896 and there's no time to spare.

I was just working on a harp. I ran out of nuts, but here is a rough timeline.

Popping off the covers, which I am super anal about, and drilling for screws...approx 10 minutes.

Other coverplate/sanding work about 10min.

Popping off the reedplates and converting to screws (I think I take a lot of time other guys don't on this...not because I am awesome but because I only know a long way). 15min-30min.

Comb sanding - 10min.

Comb sealing...three days...but that's the multiple coats and drying.

Mike..I have done all of this except the reed work (gapping / embossing). I have seen a couple of videos but they were not that helpful....I seem to just screw them up. How long does that process take you ?

The reed work? Depends on what I am going for. But even the rough stuff takes at least a couple of hours to really get it right.

Custom guys don't take so long to ship because they are working on a ton of harps before the one you ordered. It is because it takes hours to really perfect the reeds of a harp and you can't do it all at once.

To clarify, I should have said custom guys don't mass produce harps and have them ready to go. You have to pick at stuff, let it sit, pick, let it sit, etc.

It isn't as simple as work on order A until completion, than move to order B, and if you're order C it sits on a shelf until the others are done.
