T2,
With my limited knowledge of YouTube, it seems easier to me if next time we just set up an HPC channel and allow anyone on the board access to it.
This is my rationale:
For reasons that some will remember, there was concern that Harpfriends could have been open to a malitious deletion of files; files that were much more than the sum of the HPCs.
If we have a separate channel, it doesn't matter a hoot and a holler if it got messed up: people have their own secure channels, and can simply add their vids to new HPC playlists as and when we create them.
The worst thing that could then happen - which is extremely unlikely - is that the whole lot could get deleted and would have to be re-done.
GermanHarpist has seen to it that people have the info to add vids to a playlist, and, as such, we could avoid anyone having the administrative nightmare that you've endured this time.
In fact, I'll set it up later. If people don't like the idea, I'll delete it. ---------- YouTube SlimHarpMick

Tooka--I'm confused, what's this about a new harpfriend's channel? I hadn't really been following the forum for a few months, has something changed? I did see that there weren't any videos on the Harpfriends HPC3 playlist, but figured that was due to all the youtube issues that have been discussed. I had tried to post my own submission there without success and eventually created a YT channel just to post something. Anyway, what are the details of the new channel and the password, etc.?

Hi Mick,
Yes the YouTube part needs to be sorted. I too haven't had too much to do with it and don't really know the ins and outs of it too well.
It's a shame the group thing didn't work out so well but it just may be our ignorance of using it properly. There does seem to be a voting function in the group but I don't know if it would suit our purpose because it may not allow non members to vote.(I'm thinking of MBH non-participants here).
However things as they are is confusing and we must ensure that next time round it is easier to use. Also we must ensure it is simple and doesn't expect people to jump through hoops, otherwise they will lose interest.
I am comforted by the knowledge that some of our members have been grateful that they have been able to set up their kit and create there own videos and get them out there to a wider audience.
It's all very well for some of us to simply noodle away in our woodsheds etc. but it gives us the motivation to want to play better if we think our stuff is actually getting out into the cyberworld.
Anyway it's all part of the learning curve and we will learn from our mistakes. Who knows what may grow from little acorns?
I've sugeested an HPC (maybe even HPC needs a namechange?) drains up discussion once this one is over so that all ideas and suggestions could be thrown into the ring for debate in time for the next one.

@Hollistonharper@ It was thought that a Harpfriends Group within YouTube would be an easier option than using the Harpfriends Channel. A short while ago we had an unpleasant character on the forum and I thought if someone had given him the Harpfrinds Channel login and password, he could have created havoc with our posts.
To be on ths safe side and for security GH created the Harpfriends Group but unfortunately the group software didn't behave as it should and it caused all sorts of problems.
If you click my banner and go down to the rules, you'll find a link to the group and an area where you can request membership. But be warned it doesn't behave properly and we may change the way we use YouTube in the future.
I think we'll all have to have our own individual channels in the future and then we can just elect to put our videos into a dedicated HPC playlist, which is what I think Mick is proposing. It makes sense.
Regarding my first entry, that I withdrew, yeah I liked that too but I didn't want to show anybody up so I put in the second one. That's a slow burner, just watch that rocket to the top of the charts when people realise how good it is;) ----------

I think that's the most reasonable.
It's really a pitty that the group didn't work out that well. Especially, because in theory it seems to be much easier than the channel... maybe 'we' are doing something wrong. But IMO it's some kind of bug.
Anyway, let's keep this thread clean and discuss it once the HPC is over.

Yes GH I'm sure it is bugs. It is a shame but it may just be that we're not using it how it was designed to be used, like you said. I'm going to have to spend some time to play around with it and see if it can be customised for our purposes. ----------

Tooka, German Harpist link to the harpfriends group and the videos on posting to the group was extremely helpful. I 2nd harominicaMick a dedicated channel for HPC4 might help. We all could post, view, vote and comment there.

Yo... Yes, youtube was not our best friend this time around. I remember having these same conversations about how to post all the vids during the 1st HPC. Actually, given the amount of difficulty playlists and groups have given us, I think the easiest way will be to have a thread where everyone posts their vids themselves from their OWN youtube channels. The current administrator could just then copy all the code for the embedded vids from that thread into the voting thread to set it up just the way tooka has this current thread. I like all the vids individually arranged and in one post like that.
Also, to get the ball rolling on HPC4 ideas. I think whatever else it is, it ought to allow backing tracks, singing, and looping. Perhaps an even more Free For All than this one? Or we could just allow all this stuff and give a topical constraint like "it has to be blues" or even more specific "it has to be blues in the key of G" or even MORE specific "it has to be blues in the key of G and in the style of sonny boy II".
I'll tell you now that I'm NOT a fan of "let's all play this one same song and see who did it better". I don't like feeling constrained like that. And I'll bet others don't either, and that's why we had a higher turn out for this one than we did for the first two... Anyhow, that's just my dos centavos.
PS: And thanks to all the folks that voted for me! My goal this time around was just to get at least ONE vote (unlike the first HPC where I didn't get ANY!), and I've already achieved that, so I'm VERY happy!
Cheers,
Isaac ---------- ------------------

Hi Brian, hopefully fourth time lucky.
It's been difficult juggling this, there have been so many people with different questions and requirements and not enough hours in the day to deal with it all.
I've tried to keep everyone up to speed with what's going on but it only needs half a dozen people not to visit the forum for a few days and the thread has dissapeared into the forum history vaults and the discussion starts all over again but then with a new twist.
Then the people who were up to speed have not been on the forum for a few days and now they don't know what's going on --- and so it goes round and round.
I created the "HPC3 Information all in one thread" thread to try and keep things in check. It worked well up to a point but even then threads were appearing all over the place asking for info or help.
We just got to keep things as simple as possible otherwise it all goes to pot. As I said before, hopefully HPC4 will be better but as things move on in cyberland it's like trying to hit a moving target. We'll be OK though.

No apologies necessary - I put it on there at the last minute and then realised I should have uploaded it here instead. It was a pretty raucous effort anyway! Will get my backside in gear for HPC4 though. By the way, I agree with what HarmonicaMick and others have said - restricting the format rather than the song is a good idea. ---------- jodanchudan

@Isaac@ "I think the easiest way will be to have a thread where everyone posts their vids themselves from their OWN youtube channels." Good idea.
I was getting very concerned by the number of threads saying "Here's my HPC3 entry". I thought it was unfair on the non-participants in the forum to have to wade through all the HPC3 threads.
I wrote to Adam to apologise for the amount of traffic it was creating. I didn't want to wind the non-participants up.
However I agree with your comments regarding content. Hopefully that may entice more of the non-participants to look upon the challenge as a more attractive option. It's a shame that some of the old hands on here don't seem to want to join in for one reason or other.
I too got a vote. YeeHaa! I'm not too worried though. Mines a bit of a slow burner and it'll probably shoot up the chart at the last minute ;)

@ jodanchudan @ Thank you for being so understanding. I notice you've already had a mention in despatches. Well Done. Yes we've got to sort this out for HPC4. ----------

I watched the videos from the thread. I had to click through to Youtube to see any information. Maybe next time we could have a thread where everyone posts there own stuff. Say at the top for people not to comment on the thread until the contest submission ends so there aren't big gaps of text between everything. People could write a quick blurb under their post so people don't have to flip through to YouTube.
The only problem I had with the thread was that it was long enough so that it was tough to keep them all straight. I ended up writing out a sheet of paper and ranking each video, then comparing all the videos that I gave a good score to to get a top five.
I've been on other forums where someone linked stuff together on a voting page.

Yeah, I watched the vids as they came in and kept notes on paper about who I liked and why. Then I took my top 10 or so and rewatched them on the thread tooka made. So I guess I got all the info from the original vids comments to help with the initial rankings, but the way the vids were all laid out on Tookas thread made it easier for me to do the final head to head comparisons to get my top five lined up. ---------- ------------------
