A couple months back, JP Allen (of harmonica.com) survived a 60 foot fall and sustained some severe injuries. He was hospitalized and in a coma for several days. It’s a pretty serious situation and I think JP has probably a tough road ahead to recovery.
The family has set up a GoFundMe page for medical expenses:
https://www.gofundme.com/f/1smsmm4tao
There is also a blog over at Caring Bridge with more details on his condition:
https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/thejpallenproject/journal

I have no professional association with JP, nor have I been asked by anyone to share this information, but I thought I should pass this along to the harmonica community. When I was getting started with harmonica, JP’s lessons on YouTube were some of the first harmonica instruction I received, and I always appreciated his positive demeanor. He emphasized a solid foundation in basics, the connection with breathing, and the pursuit of musicality and fun. If you’ve watched JP’s videos and gotten some from them, please consider supporting him in this time.

That is sad news to hear. I have JPs courses that he put out and I really appreciated them. What I liked about them was they started out for raw beginners, like if you never picked up a harp before. Most other beginner lessons I tried were more advanced than a raw beginner. He is a great motivator in his lessons and you can really tell that he wants you to learn.I know nothing about JP other than what I know of him from his lessons,He has great enthusiasm for the harmonica and it shows. I hope he has a great, full recovery.

Thanks Mirco for sharing this. I had no idea. I've just given. The lesson here is that not everybody is plugged into everything that is happening 24/7 to every member of the harmonica community. Your post is the first I've heard of JP's troubles.

I would urge every member of this forum to give. If I'd had a 60 foot fall, had spent time in a coma, and couldn't breathe on my own, would you give? I hope you would.

We need to help our own.

FWIW, my captcha code, right now, is jprdcr. JPrdcr?! Really?

According to the blog, he fell 20 feet on October 18.
3 weeks later he was conscious, aware, able to sit up, speaking in sentences, able to be moved, but still receiving some breathing support and kidney function support. He’s had surgery to pin his pelvis back together.

I have no idea what the financial impact of something like this would be.
My late wife once fell 15 feet and hit a paling fence 10 feet into the fall. She was hospitalised around 20 weeks, and was left with a permanent limp after breaking her pelvis, femur and 7 ribs.
I expect Mr Allen derives a certain portion of his income ‘passively’, so perhaps that will keep rolling in by itself for a while, but I gather the medical bills will be substantial.
From the limited information on the blog it’s hard to tell whether he has incurred significant brain injury. Let’s hope not.

Thanks for catching that, SuperBee. While the GoFundMe lists "60 feet", the blog describes a more realistic 20 feet fall.

It's a sad situation. He had two Hawaii harmonica retreats scheduled for February and (understandably) they were cancelled.

I had a friend who tumbled down a 60 foot embankment once. Concussion, bleeding into his elbow joint... not fun.

We tease him about it now though because trying to catch himself on the way down he also caught handfuls of poison ivy.

I don't know JP personally, but people whose opinion I value are saying he's a great guy, so I'll throw a bit into the hat and wish him well. Get well.
