Hello,

this is a recording made with my pedalboard only, no post-processing, no real cabinet, bullettini mic.

What do you think?

Thanks, bye

I like the sound, but can't decide if it fits with Juke well or not. Nice playing btw

It depends on what you're looking for Dox. I'm a fan of Raw, Real, and Right Now kind of sound. Either total acoustic or just a hot mic to tube amp with maybe a delay.

Hi jbone!

I'm looking for some kind of sounds useful to play live in various contexts (blues, rock, soul) using the pedalboard only. This recording is one of some tests made to find some compromise in this way...

I like the sound overall, and even like it for the opening hook, but I'm not sure the tone works for the rest of the song. I can't quite put my finger on why... it doesn't seem to quite have enough energy, and it's not the playing, which is great.

It has a slightly artificial compressed and metallic sound to my ears - perhaps better suited to rock harmonica than this mutha of all Chicago Blues Tunes Holy Grail of songs.

Try it out on a rock tune with your own ideas...it's too hard to ignore the Little Walter etched into my brain playing alongside your example.

I like the sound a lot.

The problem with the recording is that you're not swinging. The sound isn't matched by a sense of rhythm that makes the track bounce. Some of that lack is caused by the fact that you're playing lip pursed, rather than tongue blocked.

Flavio Guimaraes has the jump.

All in all, a fine effort. And IMO it does swing. Perhaps notes could be crisper in last third of song. That’s the upside to tongue blocking I guess. But no swing down side from pursing.

I recognise this type of sound from lots of experimenting with kit, especially trying to get an interesting sound from pedals alone.

For me it's too soft and rounded, lacking the crackly, hard edge on articulations that is present in the classic amped harp tone. I found that hard to get without a speaker in the chain. Using TB exploits this timbre, but if it's not there in the first place then TB won't make it appear.

It's not surprising as typically distortion pedals are trying to emulate a soft distortion thought to be characteristic of tubes. Probably good for guitars which have a more percussive attack.

The only DI setup that did it was the Blue Dadi software, which some may remember was promoted on here some time ago. The Joyo American Sound pedal (with speaker emulation bypass hack) comes close.

But if you like the sound, you like it and that's that!

You are all right, I Don t use the TB tech and, I know, this a big issue for this kind of song.

... But I don't said a word about pedalboard!! The pedals used, in order are:

Effectrode fire bottle - > effectrode blackbird preamp (with 12au7 and 12ay7 nos tubes) - > two notes torpedo cab - > blue-sky strimon reverb - > Palmer pdi09.

The most part of metallic sound issue is made by the fire bottle : is a good machine which add some headroom and fatness on chord but has this drawback and I think I'll remove this pedal from the chain. But, in fact, the overall chain tend to a complete amplifier reproduction with a pre (blackbird with tubes) and cabinet/miking section (torpedo cab machine).

The most important thing to take into account is that this sound is only one of hundred possibilities this system can have... In 4kg of weight...in the time I have I m exploring these possibilities...

Nice job! I can tell you put a lot of work into learning Juke, which is a good idea for all traditional harp players.

To me the tone sounds thick and full, but the sound is somewhat one-dimensional and does not reproduce the sound of a tube amp where you hear clean sounds when uncupped but overdriven sounds when cupped tightly.

Also, I'm with Kudzu that the playing could be improved to swing a little more. Ideas to help improve in this area would be playing with a lighter touch (or just more variation in attack and articulation) and tongue blocking...and listening to a lot of swing music.

I'm happy that in general the sound is appreciated, even if this kind of sound applied on juke is not its "cup of tea". I know I have to learn the TB...I use split toungue only (not in this song) but I'm not able to play slap and TB, in general.

Very impressive the Flavio Guimaraes version, unfortunately I've to works a lot to get out those skills (I seriously play harp since 1 years and half :D).

But, here, my goals was to get out some positive output about timbre/sound in order to continue to suite the pedalboard project, and now I'm confident that this way is nice, maybe not comparable to a real amp, but nice, and obviously I have to grow up with harp tech (but I'm sure I've a lot of margin to improve the sound at pedals parameters/configuration/presets level)!

@Dox: wow, you have just been playing for 1.5 years? I would have thought you had been playing much longer. You are sounding great - keep up the good work!
