Who told you that?

Also, it depends on what position you play. Assuming you are playing 2nd position, that 4 hole inhale draw is part of the blues scale.

In 2nd position bent 4 draw is the flat 5 which is part of the blues scale. It's the same note as 1 draw bent and 7 overdraw. It's not part of the minor pentatonic scale perhaps that was what was meant.

Whoever said that may have been confusing the blues scale with the minor pentatonic. The bent draw 4 is not part of the minor pentatonic, which the blues scale is built off of. The minor pentatonic becomes the blues scale (in second position) once the bent draw 4 is added.

In a Topic on another Forum, I offer a diagram of THREE blues scales (considering that there will often be a I chord, a IV chord and a V chord). You can see all three chords (including their b7ths) as well as their respective scales at http://www.brendan-power.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=147 . Note how that example is based on a I (G) -- IV (C) -- V (D) chord progression. Transpose as needed.

Both the 4th hole draw and the 4th hole draw bend is part of the 2nd position blues scale. On the 3rd position blues scale the 4th hole draw is part of the scale but not the 4th hole bend.

See wikipedia.org/wiki/Blues_scale And please note that the ENTIRE minor hexatonic blues scale--including the octave of the tonic--has SEVEN notes, e.g. G Bflat C C# D F and another G.

Mike Caldwell is a *very* knowledgeable dude. If he was talking about a five-note scale, that would not be the blues scale which, in its distilled form, has six notes.

And, as other have stated, the minor pentatonic definitely does not include the flat five (bent Draw 4 in second position).

I say distilled form of the blues scale because you can embed the three so-called blue notes (flat 3, flat 5, flat 7) in a major scale to get what jazz composer George Russell called the "funky major scale."

Didn't I see somewhere that one note is considered part of the scale ascending but not descending?

More players break 4 draw flooring the bend than any other reed except for 5 draw. That must make it part of the blues scale. :-) Also known as second position slavery.
