The bass player in my band just gave me a brand new in the box Astatic MC-152 element that came from his 88 yr old ham radio enthusiast uncle who doesn't use the old stuff any more. The box looks to be from the 50's and the element looks like a 151 and sounds great but is about 1/3 quieter than any Astatic I've used- you really have to crank it up. Maybe it's just a weak one, but it sounds great otherwise.

Anyone here ever run across a 152 element?

I've never seen one of those and Astatic has made many more mics using crystal elements than just the JT30's, 200S, or the Biscuit mics and crystal elements, even when they were brand new have a tendency to vary in output quite a bit with some being too hot and some not very hot and a lot in between.

I've certainly never encountered an MC-152 either. Can you post some pics?

If it is weak - it is like most crystals its age - near death. Doesn't matter if they were being played or sitting on a shelf. Probably matters more what the average humidity was where it lived.

With crystals, extremes of temperature as well as humidity can and does affect crystals.

Yeah, news to me too. The element looks OLDER than the MC127/MC151 - looks more like the MC-101.

It's unique and a cool reminder that we haven't seen everything, but I don't believe for a second that crystal would produce any sound with the terminals blown out like that. It's obviously been exposed to a lot of moisture.
