Whisky sour:

per shot:
50cc bourbon (don't use scotch)
juice of one lime (fresh)
half as much maple syrup as there is lime juice (or a little more to taste)
(but I've heard it said that genuine maple sugar is better if you can find any)
angostura bitters
lots of ice
shake until ice is dissolved

Margarita (for two):

5 oz good tequila (Hornito's is great; Cuervo Gold OK)
4 oz good triple sec
3 oz fresh lime juice
1 oz Rose's Sweetened lime juice

Pour over ice cubes in a shaker, along with a couple of the squeezed-out lime halves. Shake 10-15 seconds and strain into two tall glasses filled with ice. Garnish with a lime wedge.

Note: the two secrets of this recipe are the 5/4/4 ratio of tequila/triple-sec/limejuice--which is my own discovery through long experimentation and shows up in no other recipe--and the substitution of Rose's sweetened lime juice for some portion of the fresh lime juice. You can experiment with the proportions of those two lime juices. The recipe also works with all fresh lime juice. But the Rose's definitely smooths it out.

This recipe will forever spoil you on bar margaritas, which are uniformly disastrous.

my standard bar order.....
A pint of water, straight out of the tap, no ice and lemon.
It's amazing how few barpeople can actually manage to get that right.

Kudzu says "This recipe will forever spoil you on bar margaritas, which are uniformly disastrous."

The only time I ever ordered a whiskey sour in a bar, they didn't have any limes and asked if Rose's lime cordial would be OK. I had a gin and tonic.

Here's a tip for bloody mary (or just tomato juice) I got from a friend who owned an indian restaurant - add some powdered vitamin C to make it more acidic.

If you like rum, I suggest you try Stroh rum from Austria. It's the best rum I've ever drunk.

Dr. Gussow,
I like your rita recipe, but for me that would be just enough to last while I made myself another. And yes Jose Cuervo is only OK. Sauza makes some great tequila.

But for me I take a tumbler and add some ice cubes (number dependant upon size of tumbler) and then add a liberal amount of either Bookers, Basel Hayden, or Blanton's bourbon. I let it breath for a minute or two and savor. Mmmmmmmmm.

1/2 cold Clausen pickle, topped with a liberal helping of fresh ground dry roasted peanut butter.

Eat the first one while making the second.

He also put ice cream on a crab rangoon once at a Chinese Buffet.

Greg,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

While I am known as the local coffee snob (having been home-roasting and making espresso at home for over 9 years) this evening was our first foray into scotch. My wife just brought home our first bottle this evening (been enjoying vodka of late). Plenty of similarities between the earthiness of a good scotch and a good espresso, so I got some recommendations on one of my favorite coffee groups. We'll enjoy it again tomorrow night when we welcome a new family member- another adopted German Shepherd!

I wonder if this one will sing along when I play like my current one does? if so, I'll finally have a dependable backing band.. errr .. pack. ;-)

1 part Scotch... 2 parts espresso.. Over ice....
With fig newtons!
OOoooooo!

Hot summer day

Go down 'n put a five on the old oak stump, come back in 30 min. 'n pickup your jar of juice. Waller out a hole in the end of a watermellon and pour in the juice. Let set in the fridge for about an hour. slice and eat the melon.

Family Recipe The story goes that the Family Farm was in trouble during Prohibition times. They could grow enough food to feed themselves but dollars were hard to come by and the bank notes had to be paid. My Greatr Grandfather, from Hungary, and My Grandfather, from Spain, Made use of the apple orchards on the farm to brew Apple Jack whiskey and sell it to all over 3 counties in PA. Since then Apple Jack Whiskey has become the Family drink and a bottle is present in all our homes. Apple Jack whiskey mixed with GingerAle with a cinnamon stick stir is a treat!

Jack - Neat

or

Spiced Rum - on the rocks

And ice on single malt is an absolute no-no however a bit of cool water, not tap water, is known to enhance the flavours & aromatics and is OK.
