I'm new to this forum and I'm sure this has been covered in a thread but, I am wondering what people's favourite slow blues songs are. I have played Big Walter's easy at several funerals now and always think of old friends and family when I hear or play that song. I really love the slow sad stuff with big tone!
Cotton's "23 Hours Too Long" is a current and long time favorite of mine. first song I learned to play in 3rd. "Stormy Monday" was a hot slow burner back when and I learned a lot about 2nd on jam stages playing it. ---------- http://www.reverbnation.com/jawboneandjolene
Oddly, the two that pop to mind this morning have no harp on them, and they are both "white guy" blues from back in my college days. One is on a Barry Goldberg album with Mike Bloomfiled -- I think the song is called "One More Mile." The other is from the Layla album -- song is "Have you ever loved a woman?"
One all time favorite, which just happens to be the first blues I "discovered' as a young lad of about 6 or so, is St. James Infirmary. I feel woefully inadequate when it comes to playing slow blues on the harmonica so I have just begun a bit of a study to try to begin to rectify the situation. I recently came across this...
I concur with TetonJohn on the Eric Clapton's version of "Have You Ever Loved A Woman". I think that the live version on the album "E.C Was Here" is one of the finest examples of slow blues guitar ever recorded by anyone. Clapton's vocals, and the timing of their delivery are the real deal.
I've never heard a great harmonica version of it (although mine is pretty decent) but I love cry me a river as sung by Julie London. It's not Mississippi blues but it's still blues. Georgia on my mind is one that I love as much or more but calling it blues might be a stretch.
I've loved this song since I heard it in our university library in 1966-- 20 listening booths, all with headphones and turntables. The whole album was a revelation.
My wife said something the last time we listened to it. She said, "Isn't that the melody for "Sitting on Top of the World?" I'd never noticed.
