Guess I had too much time on my hands. Well, not exactly but I guess I just needed a break and was tired of looking for and refurbishing crusty tarnished old reed plates in order to have inventory. I miss you guys too. I miss getting the e-mails of guys with a box of repaired harps telling me it's like X-mas and how stoked they are.
I loved that!

So, I've had lots of time to think and I've changed my mind.

I'm placing a large order with for Hand Made Series Reeds from Hohner. These are for 1896s,GMS,SP/20s,MBDs,and Crossovers.
This will be interesting as I've never used new reeds in a repair. I just used the strongest, loudest reeds I could find. It'll be nice for a change.
I'll decide on using screws or rivets when the reeds arrive.
Screw posts (ala B-Rads) are good for guys who destroy the repair. Screw posts make for fast easy reed installation.

OT. I have a screw post on one of my A harps. Sometimes I change out the 6 draw (F#) to (G) make it the Al 'Blind Owl' Wilson Tuning. Kinda fun tuning but never mind.

Aloha, Mark

Nice to hear Mark. I'm sure a lot of people in the community are very happy that you've made that decision. I have heard nothing but high praise for the work you do on harps.

That was funny azajac!

Now look what you've done. I'm going to have to learn the harp solo on Welcome back Kotter. I'm weird like that. I learn popular tunes of the day do to some weird harmonica compulsion. I'm like a strange harmonica song juke box. I know Piano Man, Room to Move, Sanford and Son, Horse w/ No Name, Candy man, Whammer Jammer, Low Rider, the list goes on and on.

welcome back mark
in all these old marine bands I have,I do prefer the screws because I have had success with gapping....hohner probably does not offer replacement reedplates because like me,people don't want to deal with the nails.....but they play as well if not better with the nails...its all about user friendly

thanks groyster,
I always convert my 1896s to screws because I need to get in and out fast for cleaning and tuning. If you have a dog or cat hair seizing a reed but can't see it, then life w/ screws is easier than dealing 22 nails. I guess you can remove only 10 nails if the seized reed is a blow reed.
but, as you already know, every time you remove the nails you compromise how tightly the nails secure the plates to the comb. nail holes tend to get wider. then harps get leaky.

Now I'll have to fuck up one of my custom harps just so I can send it to MP.

Actually I did fubar a reed on one of my Genesis harps a couple of years ago, and Mark fixed it right up -- and then some! A classic case of "above and beyond the call of duty"
One of my sweetest playing harps now.

I think I remember that Genesis harp. Did you do the
Genesis engraving on it? Might have been someone else.

Right ReedSqueal! Excellent work w/ the laser engraving. OT. have you seen arzajacs video where he drops a corian comb and one of his and the corian breaks? I've had a thing against corian ever since I dropped a customers comb I'd just drilled; a distance of 3' onto a plastic mat and it broke into four pieces. I've also repaired my neighbors corian comb he dropped. the harp was assembled. I built that harp. That corian is not the best material. Too fragile.

HOWZIT harp-er!

Happy New Year, harp-er!

By the way, That's me on the Chromatic Harmonica for the soundtrack. It's in Cm and an original tune I wrote. I'd just purchased a Hohner Super 64 which- at the time was just a 64 w/ different cover plates- and decided I'd write a tune since I'd just dropped a packet on the beast. Also I wanted to get away from third position and play the chro as it was designed to play. w/ the BUTTON! took me three months to learn my own parts, Heh, Heh, :-)

Yeaaaa ! I'm still very pleased w/the Crossovers you dialed in for me. I've been wondering what to do with the "daily driver" I keep in my truck that's old and unresponsive on a few reeds. Now I know. Glad yer back at it Mark. Been getting any time in the water while not fixing harps ?
