Hi all my fellow Harpists...
Has anybody experimented with Rap or hip hop music? or knows of any good artists who do this?
I didn't find anything great.. except, this artist 'bad news brown'..who unfortunately got murdered a few years ago. but i feel he was onto something. hes not technical at all..but... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qp_RklNtFeg
I jammed with a few rap/hip hop songs..using blues scales in 2nd/3rd position. it was alright.

Bad News Brown is the only one off the top of my head that I know of who focused on it.
Pitbull's song 'Timber', featuring Ke$ha, features a Lee Oskar sample. There are several guys who harpbox (beatbox with harmonica) or use loop pedals although they aren't rap/hip hop. Son of Dave and Brandon Bailey both use loopers. You can find some more if you Google beatbox harmonica or harp boxing/harpboxing.
There was a member a while back who was working with some rappers. I don't remember his user ID though.

If you do a forum search on "rap" or "hip hop" you'll get a few ideas. and quite a few rants that hip hop isn't music etc etc
I've posted this before - it's about 20 years old now. Harmonica by jazz guitarist Charlie Hunter. it's quite an organic sound for hip hop - all real instruments as far as I can tell. Maybe Spearhead wasnt really a hiphop band, they certainly arent now.

Yeah, we've had it out here on the forum about this in the past (you can use the search tool to find the old threads). I've sort of explored this arena myself:
I think it's a potentially great avenue to explore. I agree that Bad News Brown was the main one working it, but he was not the only one. There are others, and a fine search through YouTube can find a few of them...
@Iceman: good call on G. Love. Have you read his blog posts at Guitar World? He writes well on his influences and his goals... It's actually some of the more informative/inspirational stuff I've read about the music biz... ----------   YouTube! Soundcloud!

This is mostly a joke song, but technically it might fall into the rap/harp genre. Forgot about it. It's about the quest for a fat man (me) to find money to get some candy out of one of those quarter only candy machines. I was just starting out on harp at that point, and even by that low standard it was a simple part, but technically, it's words spoken and harp. lol. (I was also just learning how to record multiple tracks.)

Here's my post from a thread entitled "Hip Hop Harp (sort-of)" from Januaru of this year:
Track 16 - Partymatic (HEADS UP - explicit lyrics)
I stopped by a friend of mine's studio a couple weeks ago and he asked to me play on this track. I did one take (pre-vox) and I could barely hear myself b/c the headphones were cutting in and out the entire time. I was playing acoustically into a SHURE dynamic bass drum mic, not sure what model. I'm not a big fan of the song itself, but IMHO I think my playing was ok, considering I had no idea what it sounded like while I was recording it haha.
Let me know what you guys think!!
I hear harp in Hip Hop quite a bit( I listen to a good amount it) This song is one of my favorite Hip Hop Harp tunes. The harp starts at about 5:06. Don't know why but IMO the harp on here is just plain cool.

Steamrollin, don't sugar coat it! Rap is a huge genre with all sorts of sounds and influences. Just like any form there is the 'pop' variety of mass produced crap, but aside from having someone rhythmically saying words without a melody line for the lyric (and often there is a melody for the chorus), it can have all the elements that any other music has.
(And there are some old blues songs that came pretty close to having no melody line for the vocal.)
