As a contributor, I recuse myself from voting, but I do agree with MindTheGap's assessment of what makes for a strong favicon... And this is not just because he likes the one I made! :) It simply made sense to me from a design perspective...

tooka, I make the MBH orange to be HTML #D44202 RGB(212,66,2) rather than your HTML #F93826 RGB(249,56,38), if that's any help. Maybe the colour has got mangled in making a jpeg.

isaac, actually I like my last one now. But now I can't vote for it. I do like your 'one harp' image, did you make that?

My favorites, not in any order, are:

--tookatooka (just above on this page)
--MindtheGap (just above on this page)
--isaacullah (his last design, if I remember correctly)
--jinx (the harp w/o letters)

I think tooka's may do it for me.

What the best way of arbitrating this? I'd like to see all of them in one post, side by side, so we can all look at them.

Thanks for putting them all together, Nate! That really helps.

Sitting a normal distance from my screen, the ones that pop out to me from a readability/recognizability standpoint are 3, 10, 14, and 15.

Unless I put my face really near the screen, most of the rest are an indistinguishable blur. And I've got "better" than normal vision...

Just a note to say that the array of images Nate has kindly created probably consists of second generation jpg copies and depending how they were optimised when saved will not be as sharp as the favicons which they were generated from. The favicon will be better.

Tooka, correct. I did set the jpgs to 100% for best results, but .icos do display better. Looking at them together, I think mine would have benefitted from a better color match. The letters don't pop.

I like #3 and #15 best. I would like to see them in bright blue (for the "blues" in "modern blues harmonica.") Is there any chance of that?

I think No.15 was Isaac's.

I'm sure he wont mind if I put it here on his behalf.

Yeah, Tooka, I was just wondering what #3 would look like with either blue lettering, or, the orange lettering but the blue box (sort of a simplified, 2 color only, #16)

Alright, everybody: #3 in blue (Tookatooka's contribution) wins. Isaac's in blue is the runner up.

Thanks to everybody who participated. Tooka, please email me (asgussow at aol dot com) and I will send you a link so you can download the new Blues Doctors album for free. Official release date is Friday, so you'll be the first person on this forum to have it. And you WILL say nice things about it.

Nate, I hope you can install the blue favicon ASAP.

It is, I think, up. Anyone who can't see it, let me know. Apparently the code can be finicky depending on your browser. It displays on the tab in Chrome, and seems to work in IE. I don't have Firefox, Opera or Safari on my computer though.

It looks stupendous in Firefox. It's as good as any of the pro favicons out there. Seriously: It's getter than Google and AOL. Blue and white are dynamic. Congratulations to Tookatooka for a job very well done.

Frank, not if I can help it. Right now I'm studying up on Favicon design. It seems that playing Minecraft teaches you the same skill set- low pixel graphic design! I should be a pro in a week or two and should be a master shortly after that. Now I just need to figure out how to program a CNC machine in Minecraft (don't laugh, people have built working computer circuitry in the game) and I'll have a harmonica company up and running in no time.

edit!!! Okay, so at my annual physical this year, for the first time ever, with one eye I had a hard time reading the 'average' eyesight line (I think it was allergies). That said, I just solved a crazy captcha. I had 3-4 u's or v's, and somehow I figured out which ones were which!

Great, Thanks guys. Seeing as a lot of browsers use a grey background, I could do one with a transparent background if you feel that would be better than the white Nate?

Thanks Frank :)

Yes, the new favicon looks great! Great job Tooka (and Isaa) and thanks Nate for the install. However, when it was first installed, it was displayed in my favorites AND the web address area. Now, it's just displayed in the favorites, while the web address area is still the standard "e" (internet explorer) favicon. I'm using IE10 and Windows 7. Just thought I'd mention it.

Hey tooka...I wondered about that so I deleted the favorite, deleted all the cookies and restarted IE and now I don't have the favicon in my favorites or the web address. Is this an issue with IE or something on my end? Any suggestions welcome!

Did you re-save MBH as a favorite again? I'm not sure if it's an IE or Windows 7 problem, I know my IE8 had a similar problem and was slow so I went over to chrome which appears better.

Yep, I re-saved MBH as a favorite…even cleared my Windows 7 DNS cache as well as deleted all other MBH related favorites before I cleared history, temp files and cookies…but still with the same result. If no one else is having this issue, I guess it’s something I’m doing. I’ll keep trying. At any rate, for the short time I could view the favicon…it was great!!! ;)

Hmm, it could be because we converted it to a .png. Although the site how-to says the site supports .ico files it's only half-true. It supports them if you link to an them from an outside source, but it won't let you save them on the site multimedia page. Originally, I linked a .ico from my dropbox account, but after some wrestling with it, we changed it to a .png so it could be saved here (less chance of the link getting broken that way.)

Hi Nate...just in the little bit of Google research I did to try and find out if it was on my end and what I could do, numerous sources said that IE 10 and before only support .ico favicons. IE 11 is suppose to support .png and .ico. And now I've told you all I know about favicons! :)

Ok AZ, I'm checking at this end to see if we can't get full support for genuine .ico. :)

Edit: AZ, could you click on the homepage and see if that loads it? Help desk switched that one for us, and if that's working, I'll roll it out to the other pages. :)

I can't take the credit. Support did that. Now I've got some HTML cutting and pasting to do. :)

edit- Okay, I've rolled it out to all the pages. If anyone is having problems now, let me know. I also disabled the old link, so if I missed any pages they will be without a favicon... I've double checked, but if anyone stumbles on one, let me know and I'll fix it. :)
