I have a customer who has asked me if my Marine Band combs are compatible with Hering 1923 reed plates. Since I have never owned or even seen a Hering 1923 I had no idea. My good friend Greg Jones has confirmed that the combs have the identical footprint but he is unsure about the screw hole pattern (a lot of good he is!).

So I’m throwing this out to the experts. Does the screw hole pattern on a Hering 1923 match up to a Marine Band Deluxe or Crossover comb?

Thanks.

Tom, may I make a suggestion? Make a list of all the oddball combs that you don't have access to, and put a call out for people to send you some samples. Maybe you could offer a free comb for the first of each comb to come in? Or, you could ask people to send you a SASE with the comb in question. You get to measure their comb, then you send it back to them with their purchase? (I've got a couple oddball combs I could send you. Right now, I think the trade balance is in your favor. I could send you samples of pre-MS Blues Harps, a Silvertone Deluxe and a couple other oddballs. Of course, in that case, it would be in the greedy hope that you'd start carrying some combs for a couple of those oddballs. (I'm working on a set of pre-MS Blues Harps).

No the holes don't line up.

It's been my experience that screw patterns of different makes and models are never compatible unless modified in some way.

@1847 - If the customer was sending his harp to me, I could drill any holes that were required to make the reed plates and comb fit. However, I cater to a lot of Do-it-yourselfers and I never know what type of tools and/or skills they possess. Some of my customers are way more skilled that I am. Some are not sure which end of the screwdriver to hold. And everything in between.

Perhaps the solution is to just have the customer send the harp to me since it is fairly well agreed that the footprint on the combs is the same.

On a different note which I thought I,d add is I put a set of Hering 1923 covers on a Sp 20 comb and they matched up nice and have a nice look with the bronze on black.

!923 covers can be made to fit MBs with 3 nail holes on either side of the reed plates too.
they are pretty thick and you may notice a slightly darker tone.
