Interesting video that shows you 'how old' your ears are.

Sadly, much as I suspected. My Mom was out last year and couldn't hear the bell birds. Tragic. "Break, bend and destroy" could be good lyrics.

As a piano tech, hearing is important. I wasn't surprised to find that I'd lost the high frequency bands....loud amps as a young musician and old age make it hard for me to hear conversations with lots of back ground noise...like in a bar.
However, it's interesting that I can still hear the high range of a piano while tuning that last octave and have no trouble adjusting the overtones to put it in good tune. (I do stretch the octaves slightly as I go up the piano).
Have heard other pianos tuned by guys that seem to have no clue where to place that last octave. Glad I'm not one of them. ---------- The Iceman

I was only a little better than my age bracket. At one point I could walk into a bank and hear the alarm system. All this time I just thought they'd gotten quieter. :(
Still, I was a little better than my age bracket, so I guess it's not too bad.
SteamrollinStan, does it sound anything like this?
(Warning, video contains a little profanity.)

Pardon?
At 60+ I was amazed to be able to hear a high pitched whine on all samples, then I realised it was my tinnitus:( ----------

Yeah I'm good to 12k. Nothing at 15k. I recall hearing 20k in tests as a 15year old. Noticed my left ear perceiving things louder than my right wile on a phone call yesterday. Reversed the headset to check it was my hearing. It was. Did a hearing test. Up to 8k they are exactly the samein sensitivity. But my brain thinks sound coming from the left is louder. More testing required. ----------

Interesting.... I had a hearing test a month ago. My mother is a Doctor of Audiology, and we had myself, my kids and my wife all tested. I came up with perfect hearing and no loss (a good thing since my father is deaf, and that is due to a genetically passed on problem).
I heard only up to 12k and nothing past, which makes me think it might be a computer problem.

I couldn't hear any of them with my right ear and only the first one with my left ---------- Wisdom does not always come with old age. Sometimes old age arrives alone.

Chinn, it may be that a certain amount is considered 'no loss' since everyone gets it?
C8, the note at the high end of the piano, is only 4186. That means C9 would be 8372. C10 would be 16744. In regular life you'd probably never need to hear that noise. Higher than this.

Yeah it's dodgy I think. I tested well beyond 16k but I have to turn up the volume as the kHz increases. And that does fire up the tinnitus. ----------

I have been hard of hearing (30/40 percent loss left/right ears) all of my life and wore hearing aids when I was young. Today I do without the hearing aids, read lips and will ask someone to repeat something if I didn't understand them. My hearing loss, I believe, has something to do with the tone I get and contributes to my erratic sense of timing. ---------- Ted Burke http://www.youtube.com/user/TheoBurke?feature=mhee

So, I guess the solution, for all of us, is to scrap the harps and take up the bass. Nobody ever seems to lose hearing in the low frequency range.

I remember being told about how as one gets older, one eq's music with more highs, less bass. And tends toward music mixed with less bass. So if you are old and want to create an impression with young folk, forego your own pleasure and mix for more bass than you prefer... The freaky thing is that it's insidious. I was quite upset that I couldn't hear on this test above the alleged 12k tone. Last time I checked I was able to detect 18k. This experience drove me to do further tests and I was relieved to find my hearing is still essentially 'normal'. My dad is deaf as a post, which I believe is industrial deafness caused by his own failure to wear hearing protection while making his neighbours miserable. I mean operating his saw bench. That thing screamed. The band I played in all wore ear plugs. This led them to play louder. I hate earplugs. I went to some gigs where the audience wore earplugs. This caused me some concern. And amusement. I have decided I will not remain at a gig where the sound level causes me to fear for my hearing. I doubt I'll be missing much. What a grumpy old fart I have become! ----------

one of my heroes when i was a kid was Beethoven
oh shit
one evening i was sitting with some great company on the large verandah of one of our concert band players when i realized i wasn't hearing the conversation
i thought i should see a doctor as i had been flat chat and thought i might be ailing with a set of important performances coming up
hell ...
i've lost the top of my hearing and 15 years later it isn't gettin' any better
audiologists are the worst. they just don't get it. they think you can just stick bugs in your ears and everything will be fine
but it ain't ...
when i was a kid i got a heap of crap from my old man about not speaking clearly, etc, etc, etc, now of course, i realize what was going on
yeah SuperBee, you're probably a grumpy old man but i love your band set up
Jelly Shakers debut do you have any audio yet?
there is another thread which discusses guitar players and my thoughts were that rehearsing acoustically is great for sound and balance
my hearing loss is father genes ... i have never been one for loud music
when you notice your deafness, do something about it. don't say that you will manage, i'll be alright.
you bloody won't be.
apart from missing out musically we miss out socially and the hard thing is we don't know it.
after i got my first bugs my kids said one day, 'gee, we've never heard dad talk so much'
do something about it.
regards to everyone.

Hi Joe, no I only have a little from the practice room. The band doesn't play very often, we did a gig 20 July and since then I think we have rehearsed once, and without the bass. Playing again 1 September. Couple of rehearsals prior to that. It sounds ok outdoors, and I landed 3 jobs from that outdoor gig we photographed, so must have some appeal. It's such a part time outfit for the drummer and bass though, I'll have to teach them the songs again this weekend. You can get away with that in a busking situation, but when you are trying to entertain a captive audience the lack of togetherness becomes quickly plain. ----------
