A term I'd never heard applied to amplifiers until today. I mean, yeah, I know of amps that generally fall under the description of the term. But I suppose "Widowmaker" is an apropos term for these zappers. Here's a neat little rundown on identifying them, diagnosing them, and remedying them.

Huh. I always thought it was the ghost of some blues player trying to tell me to stay away from his amp!
Magic Big Doc Reverend Sonny Boy DeWilliamsfield II, to be specific.

I have owned Lectrolabs, Kays and Custom Krafts with the "AA5" tube set. They are truly cheap-ass amps with dinky transformers and table top radio tubes, but they are great bedroom amps and I've used them on stage too by micing them.. Those oddball tubes can sound pretty good--they break up and get pretty nasty without waking the neighbors.
If you're worried about killing yourself, a 12 dollar isolation transformer, a fuse and a cord from an old computer will make them safe. The Custim Kraft I have now came with a 8" Jensen Alnico and its a hell of an amp for the 70 bucks I have in it.
