I attended a meeting, at the spa I go to regularly to swim, to organise a charity 'swimathon' in aid of cancer research.
The event will feature the musicians who go there too.
A bunch of musicians sat round the table with the spa manager, lets go round the table and see what each of us can bring to the party? Singer, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, guitar and me harmonica...silence and they all looked down their pretty little noses at me as though to say 'are you serious'
Oh well I love a challenge, onward and upward:)

yeah, i got the same thing.. a conference wanted the participants to provide the musical entertainment.
I told the organizer I played harmonica, and he said we will not be playing your kind of music (without asking what kind I actually play). There ended up being a group that covered clapton and 60/s 70s rock and some blues.
if they know me and have heard me play, they generally ask me to sit in. is it disrespect to the instrument or disrespect based on the average level of player?

Don't know if my buddy Greg Jones over at 16:23 will add to this thread so I might as well tell a funny story that happened to him last summer. A group of musicians at his church were planning an event and he told them that he played harp. He got some "looks". I think the organizers were relieved when he showed up with his case full of HARMONICAS! They thought he meant he played the HARP, as in the stringed instrument. ---------- Tom Halchak www.BlueMoonHarmonicas.com

I heard an interesting comment - one of my neighbors in a gathering mentioned that I play "a little blues harp" and another neighbor within earshot says "oh no, harmonica just puts me to sleep" What? ---------- Go ahead and play the blues if it'll make you happy. -Dan Castellaneta

It was the look that said 'toy' that made me post this thread.
I have had it over the years but thought that (mistakenly) people listened to modern and past blues.
Actually rbeetsme I play a mean Jews harp too:)
Funny how 'looks' can mean a lot!

We harp players are in trouble if we aren't even getting respect at a SPA(H) event!
