Protruding coverplates -- an invention by a Sadist for Masochists?
Or are there people who actually -- perversions aside -- LIKE coverplates cutting into their lips.
I´m asking as I´m putting away a Hohner GM after another lip tearing session. Those would otherwise be my favourite harps but ever so often I find myself wishing I had the guy who invented them within arms length.

I know, S20´s are the same reeds (or am i wrong?) and very comfortable bodies. But there´s a huskier tone to the GM´s that I like.

Love my Golden Melodys. They do protrude a little but I never had a problem cutting lips.
It could be the harp angle or tension. I play with the back of the harp tilted up touching the lips as lightly as possible.
I suppose you could sand them down.

Gm's are great harps but I agree, those gillette reed plates are murder. Some are worse than others and instead of sanding them like some folk do, I run a piece of hardwood along them a few times to dull the edge.

I've got three great sounding Blues Harps that I almost never play if I can help it. The combo of protruding reed plates AND unsealed wood combs is too much. That said, I know I could fix them with sanding and sealing.

Its pretty easy to smooth out the sharp edges on reed plates and cover plates by using very fine steel wool (like 0000), on all the edges and corners... of course, you have to dismantle the harp first.

I have never had this problem. Maybe because I default to tongue block? Hard to say; any tongue blockers suffer from harps cutting they lips?
