I’ve been wanting to cover this song for a while and have finally worked it out in 3rd position. I just stumbled across this position because 2nd position is my default position and it works really well with only one overblow in the whole song.
I’ve shortened the vid down from my original recording (this is a handy newish facility in youtube editing) because the original song is quite long. I’m mainly following the melody line but break off into improv. Around 2min30secs to end.
I dig it man! I know a lot of people like tabs but it is amazing how much you learn about the instrument and the position by picking a tune out yourself. I worked out Somewhere Over the Rainbow in 1st, 2nd, and 12th. May never use it but great training. Nice job Grey Owl. You can play anything man!

@harpdude Yeah I think I've got the 'position' bug now. The penny's dropped and I am beginning to appreciate the possibilties of multi position playing even though they are limited at the moment in my case to 1,2,3,5 and 12. but still mainly 2nd!
It's handy to have a good ear to pick up tunes quickly and this is how I first learnt to play. No tabs, no internet, no slow down software but just listening to a record and painstakingly, frustratingly, trying to work it out. I guess that was good training though because there were no short cuts and you just had to keep plugging away.
I think that's a great idea of choosing a well known tune like SOTR and try to play it different positions.
Great job as usual. Your recent post of Looking for Somebody really helped me with the solo. I'd love to hear you do the solo in Doobie Bros. Long Train Running. Thanks again.
Love the Doobie Brothers but never played that solo. Here is a good French player called Paul Lassey who offers a tutorial on that solo. The sound on this vid only seems to be coming out of the left channel and it is in French but he shows an on screen tab and breaks the solo down.
