My pignose 7-100 sounds to have a speaker problem. Thinking about alternative amps.
Any recommendations? The Roland micro cubes spring to mind. Are there different models?
I got no idea of the availability or price for a new speaker in my old pignose, is it worth repairing?

Should be able to get a replacement speaker off eBay. Wouldn't take a tech more than a few minutes to replace it for you. Roland does a good range of small battery powered amps.

A small speaker for the Pignose could probably be bought very cheaply I'd have thought.
The Roland Street amp looks like it might be ok. A Mouse amp (Lectrolab?) would be ideal if you can find someone selling one.

I have a cube street

it kicks a lot of ass

Is gonna be a bit cleaner than a pig nose I'd guess. I use pedals in front of mine. Lasts about 15 hours on a change of batteries.

I use a pedal juice and a daisy chain to power my effects. Pedal juice is good enough to last a few hours between charges. I actually own 2 so that's moot but depending on load we are talking a long gig with 6-8 pedals or probably over 24 hours of just 1 or 2 low draw pedals.

Also to agree with kingley

Mouse amps are pretty damn bad ass. You need proof look at Adam Gussow it by itself or paired with another amp seems to be a huge thing he goes back to. Great street amp. Heck a friend of mine plays his at one of the smallest venues in town for guitar.

When I was looking at the Roland products, I chose the CUBE Street over the other models. It seemed to be a little more versatile. I am reasonably happy with it, although it is the only amp I have ever owned!

I have a couple of the little Pignoses, and I've recently purchased the Roland Cube Street. The Piggy gets a decent sound, more so when you run two at once, but it is very one-dimensional. The Roland is more pricey, but comes with a digital delay, reverb and more. It also has two inputs. It's great for busking, tailgates, campfires, living rooms, small venues. I use a Lone Wolf Tone+ in front of it, which improves the tone somewhat. It's more of a "real" amp with which you can experiment with all the features and learn a little about amplifier dynamics in general. With the Piggy, you just plug it in and adjust the volume. Gotta love the little pig-snout volume knob, though.

The Luna UK-5 ukelele amp is similar to the Pignose. I tried one out and liked it a lot.

I use to have a 7-100. Now I have a Pyp-PB1. Better battery life (and it's rechargeable), better bottom end, and much more volume than the pignose. I get a great amped tone by chaining a cheap Danelectro PB&J to a cheap Danelaectro Fab Echo/reverb in front of the amp. I use a little mic I made myself (rehoused dynamic element). It's got a huge sound and is VERY portable. Plus, I get a lot of attention because it's built into a plumbing fitting...

I've tried and had a number of small battery amps. Most are better for guitar. I keep coming back to my Lectrolab Maxi Mouse. Yep, Adam turned me on to that one.

I am using the Crate Limo 50 and the Alesis Trans Active Mobile. Love the set up. Both amps are in the $400.00 range. Long life rechargeables. Both have pole mounts and 3 inputs. I like the Crate the best, by far, but have had some trouble with the XLR input.

I set the input in the middle (voice A, instr B), set the master volume to about 8, tone heavy to the bass side. If I want more grit, I'll turn up the channel volume for more gain.

Interesting rbeet. What type of mic do you use? Hi-Z or lo-Z? If you have the master volume at 8, At what point can you turn the other volume without getting either too much dirt or feedback? Most battery amps don't give you so much volume control, except maybe the Roland Street Cube. Thanks for the info.

When I tried the Roland Mobile, that was by far the best I´ve heard in small amps (and this one is very small), so I bought it. No regrets.
Check it out.

I use an Astatic JT30 w/volume control, Shure CM99A86 element. The higher the gain, the better chance of getting some distortion.

@Kingley @rbeetsme

Lectrosonics.

And yes, they are great rechargeable amps. I bought a bunch off eBay but now people want ~$500 for them. There is even a small "Mini Mouse" up for auction on eBay now. I saw a "Moose" a little while ago.

@MJ, Do it!

Anyone else tried the vox mini 3? $129 in LMS. Looks to have good features..Rogonzab, you used it much?

Roland micro cube is $149.

These seem to be all I'm likely to be able to pick up by the weekend. Apart from a fender mini tweed twin :)...

Not sure what's the problem with my pignose...decides to pack it in 3 days before I need it...nasty rattles at low frequency...like static, but frequency correlated...

An inexpensive rechargable amp that you might want to check out would be the Jay Turser Classic Ten.I bought one a while back for $40.used and it not only sounds decent enough but is also a very solid built unit.It runs on ac/dc and if you go into the MBH search another member reccomends them for busking.I tried mine before buying with a harp Tone Pedal to fine tune the tone and it was definitly a keeper.

SuperBee, I dont use it for busking, because I sell the amp a few month back in order to buy my tube amp.

But, the amp is great. Awesome tone, and good effects.

funy thing, right now I am too looking for a busking amp, so I dont have to carry my amp arround(Is not that heavy, but is always a risk), and all point to buy the Vox Mini3 one more time.

@NiteCrawler: That was probably me recommending the Jay Turser. It's a good amp, and probably sounds better with a bullet mic than my dynamics. I LOVE the styling of that amp! It's gets really dirty too, if that's your thing... I did (somewhat regrattably) end up giving it to a guitar playing friend when I moved out here to Indiana last summer (I was trying to consolidate my stuff). It sounded REALLY good with his guitar (a gretsch), so I feel like it has a good home. He's a good friend of mine, so I still get to visit that little amp whenever I go back to AZ... I miss it though! :)

I'm still itching to try out the Peavey Nano Vypyr. In most features, it looks like it's on a par with the Roland Micro Cube. But it's got an additional clean XLR mic channel for vocals or clean playing.

I just picked up a Maxi Mouse. At first short use it seems pretty cool. It will take a bit to find the right settings. I think I will like it though. It came with new batteries and a nice cover that has a side pocket to hold the charger.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. it was looking pretty urgent. I'm busking the Cygnet folk festival this weekend, with my mate who will be playing a strat through a Roland micro cube. Given the date, if I needed a new amp I was gonna have to borrow or buy from LMS today. This could be a one shot deal, thinking about it I was reluctant to spend $150 if I could avoid it.
I love my amps, but I also am in the process of getting rid of clutter. Somehow buying another amp seemed to conflict with this.

So I pulled the pig apart last night, couldn't find obvious problem. Thought the speaker was a bit loose against baffle; tightened. Problem seemed freq related, so thought likely to be speaker or maybe electronic component failure, but perhaps vibration/connection prob. Cleaned input jack, cleaned volume pot. Plug and play last night, did not notice problem. Maybe 2wice I thought I heard a hint of crackle. Was keeping volume low though...
I'm gonna risk it with the pignose.
A guy here in aus pointed me to the Yamaha THR series amps, which seem great but about $2-300. I thought I should share though

If i was gonna buy, I need to try things and there's just no time really. If I have to play acoustic, so be it.
I have no idea what to expect from this weekend, so I'll try to shell out as little as possible. We are under prepared, still generating new songs last night. This is gonna be like jamming in the shed, except with people walking past. Or like me waiting at the bus stop except there'll be a guitarist and a hat.
Still there'll be thousands of people there, hopeful we'll cover expenses, and we'll learn something about ourselves and the songs, how it goes over. May not be folky enough, I'm hoping our groove will get attention, and that the harp is unusual enough to make us a little bit interesting. The material is questionable I think, kinda pop blues, plus this an that, a smattering of well known songs. but gotta start somewhere. I think it's mainly about energy anyway.
To this audience, maybe the harp will actually be quite mundane. There's nothing riding on it though, just a learning experience really. If it goes over, we'll do it again, and then i'll be able to approach the gear situation from a better-informed basis.
This place is not much of a prospect for busking usually. Small population and very restrictive rules. But festivals provide an opportunity.
if its flat, give it more thought. Nice weather, nice location, good festival. It won't be a dead loss even if they ignore us.
