Playing harp is like being an astronaut, we just need a bit of space. Have you ever gigged and got none?

There have been gigs for me when the stage was unbelievably cramped. I usually try to make the best of it, but if I know ahead of time that space is gonna be scarce, I'll bring my Kalamazoo and use the line out into the PA to...A: save space of a mic stand, and B: reduce the risk of feedback from another mic in confined quarters.

Going with your astronaut joke, I give you a toast to space....

When God made man, he made him out of string
Had a little left over, so he left that little thing
But when God made woman, he made her out of lace
And he ran a little short, so he left that little space.

Physically or musically?

One place we were packed so close I couldn't even shift my weight. I ended up with a killer back ache.

Musically, I've had some problems with the uke. We'd add uke to some of our songs, and the uke player didn't really have enough time to come up with lines to complement mine, more just play what I was playing. Uke and harp can sound good together, but not playing the same line. (We eventually adjusted. It was just a learning curve when the band went from a duo to a quartet.)

Space can apply to both, but I really meant space to play, I have stood back with no space to even vamp a bit whilst the lead goes off into his own solo world but just love and appreciate when you get the faintest of nods and know you've at least got the next 12 bars to yourself!
