My junk harp box is quickly catching up to my good harp box. I have never replaced reed plates in the past. Is this worthwhile, and when can I get them?

"Is this worthwhile, and when can I get them?" Yes it is worthwhile. I think you meant where can I get them. If you are in the UK Harmonicas Direct. ----------

I think you'd have to look at the economics and the harp. I've replaced reeds on Promasters. That's a $45 harp and $22 reed plates. The solid aluminum comb and heavy duty covers aren't worn out, not even close, so I feel like it's worth it.
What kind of harp are you talking about?

i have mostly MB's some Blues Harps, and a few special 20's. I am in Pittsburgh PA. But im not sure how many are MS. At about $30 each to replace and about $25 plus shipping for reed plates, they may end up in a landfill. seems a shame.

Hi,bluedogg. Nice to see another forum member from Pittsburgh. I checked Coast2Coast,a Blues Harp costs $32,reed plates go for $23. It used to be a bigger price difference, but you still save 9 bucks.I've read somewhere that the reedplates were better than the originals, but I don't believe it. They do seem to be gapped better than an OOTB harp. The MS series fit Blues & Pro Harps and Big Rivers.

Tooka-yes,I was too busy for the last one. Finally got to watch the entrys. What a great bunch of entrys, not a bad one in the bunch. It inspired me to try my own version. I like playing it much more in 3rd than 2nd position. I'm definitely in for HPC3.Don't think I'll start on it until a month before the deadline. Otherwise,it will drive me crazy trying to get it "perfect".

I've bought MS replacement reedplates for an MS Blues Harp. It's only worth it if you have spent time/effort customizing your comb and coverplates. For example, I spent a lot of time sanding the comb perfectly flat, rounding the corners, and then i soaked in mineral oil to make it water/swell proof. I also opened the backs of the cover plate up and bent down the tabs for more volume and projection. So for me, it did not make sense to have to do all that again with a new harp, and I opted to buy replacement reedplates.
Since then, however, I have learned that you can get BigRivers for less than the MS replacement reedplates. Since BigRivers are MS harps, their reedplates will fit all other MS harps. If you go this route, not only will you get the new reedplates, but you'll get some good coverplates that have nice side vents. The MS replacement reedplates were of better quality than the Blues Harp reedplates only in that the Blues Harp reedplates were really quite bad, and had low quality control (some of the reeds had been tuned so much that they had HOLES in them!). Anyway, I still have two Blues Harps that I've managed to make into decent harps, and I maintain them, but I won't ever buy any more new MS harps.
FYI, you can't get replacement reedplates for Spec20's and Marine bands, so in those cases you are SOL and either have to buy new, or learn to replace individual reeds that you scrounge from your supply of defunct harps. ---------- ------------------

i dont care for blues harps too much. i've inhaled reeds twice (Only ever happed with them) the second time i thought i was gonna die in the middle of a gig. I kinda like Big Rivers for the money and the special 20's seem to really hold up for me. the plastic combs seem bright and dont require much upkeep. I do love the MB's though. seem to be my go to harps most of the time

Actually, Isaac, you CAN get replacement reed plates for the Marine Bands. If I'm not mistaken a MB Delux reedplate will fit on a MB. You can order replacement reedplates directly from Honerusa.com
Here's a link to the parts you can order, but you have to actually call in and talk to someone. It isn't an order on line type of deal.

Preston: I did not know that! But it seems that the reedplates cost more than a NEW regular Marine band, so that does not seem cost effective at all, and as such is not a real solution.
From the Hohner price list:
"Marine Band Deluxe Comb $ 15 Covers $ 12 Reed Plates $ 34 Case $ 10"
A new marine band goes for $29-31 from various online services...

Totally worth it! Call David Payne and order the tools from him/Elk River Harmonicas http://www.elkriverharmonicas.com he'll set you with the same tool set up he gave me that I have been using now for a few years. Dave rules, is very knowledgeable is an exceptional craftsman and a really fast and easy person to do business with. The tools are great, super quality, low price and work way faster, certainly cheaper and are quicker than going to the store and buying a new harp cuz one dumb read went bad! ( I sometimes replace a reed or two on breaks if CD's arn't selling...) Seydel makes the reed puncher, the 0/80 screws and the wrench to tighten them up. Dave well set you up with the reemer, detailed instructions and anything else you'll need. Jason Ricci

Replacement reeds for MS are now $27 on-line. The Big River harmonica is $25. Would it be better to buy the Big River, pull the reeds, stick them in the comb and cover plates of your choice, then toss the remnants?

I've replaced a multitude of MS reed plates in Big River harps. The quality of the replacement plates seems much better than the originals. ---------- The Blues Photo Gallery
