Just wanted to take a quick second and introduce myself. I am new to the world of harp and am taking the leap into amplified harmonica. I just picked up an electrovoice 631b today on eBay and am currently on the hunt for an amp( suggestions welcome) I am a firefighter/paramedic by trade so my schedule (24 hours on 48 hours off) allows me to practice on my days off uninterrupted. Anyway I just wanted to say hello. This forum has been a great source of info and I look forward to the journey. -Ed

Ed, In case you need anything mic or amp-wise, there is a great shop in Salem called the Harp Mic Shop (harpmicshop.com). Dave is a great guy who does excellent work, sells parts and is willing to spend time with you on the phone or in person.

Thanks for the heads up; I live in Albany so Dave is just 15 minutes away. I will have to see what he has available amp wise. -cheers

Welcome to the board bud! I'll second the recommendation of The Harp Mic Shop. Dave's great. He just modified my Akai DM13 and I'm eagerly awaiting its return. In terms of your amp search, I'd highly recommend an old Kalamazoo Model One or Model Two. Greg Heumann here on the forum sells these through his site. www.blowsmeaway.com They're great harp amps. I love mine. If you want a solid hardwood cabinet for it, I'm starting to delve into building these for anyone who wants one.

Welcome aboard! I saw Albany and got excited for a second; wrong coast though. I'm in the one in New York. (Can't find many other harpers out here). I mostly play through the house system, so I don't know much about amps, but there are lots of guys around who do. You might want to check out Rick Davis's recent thread if you haven't already. He asked what amps people were playing through and got over a hundred responses. :)

Hey firemedic, I'm a firefighter and sometime harp player from Sydney, Australia.
Our shifts are 10/14, 24 hrs sounds rough. I've been doing a fair bit of on-shift practice when its not busy. Good for your harp playing not so good for popularity on station. Anyway, welcome.

@nacoran; thanks for the link!

I think I have my search narrowed down to a referb'd kalamazoo model 2 or a vht special 6. Seems like folks have strong opinions about both.

@conjob; thanks for the welcome, stay safe down there in Australia. Once you work the 24 hour shift you wouldn't want to work anything else! Some departments up here actually work 48 hours on and 96 off.

Welcome, firemedic15! Either of the amps you mentioned would be a good choice. My philosophy is that all new players who want good amped tone should buy a small 5-watt tube amp as soon as they feel ready. Every player needs one.

I prefer the tone of the 6V6 tube in the VHT, but that is subjective. Listen to videos of both amps and find a sound that appeals to your ear.
