I recently discovered the first recording I ever did with the harmonica - or any instrument for that matter. It has survived forgotten on an age-old band page for some 7 years. I believe it was recorded in 2005. I don't even have the material on a cd anymore.

Take a listen (hope this works):

I'm posting it here for anyone who's interested in comparing a harp players progress. I had played the harp 5-6 months max before my high school band did this. Mixing sucks (among lots of other things), and I had to record those melody parts in multiple takes as I kept running out of breath. But on a personal level I still find this little tune stirring and nostalgic.

What struck me most hearing this after 7 years is that I play in 3rd position. I had NO IDEA of ANY positions at the time. The 1d bend I play there was probably the only bend I could play. But after all these years I still find myself playing in 3rd position a lot, probably more than 2nd.

Could this turn out to be a thread where all of us could post our first creations with the harp? Would be interesting to hear some first steps from the fine players on this forum.

I think this is the first thing I ever wrote on harmonica. It was also the first time I tried adding effects in Audacity. At the time I was having a hard time even playing something this simple over and over the same way, so I think I looked the track 3 times to get the desired length out of one good take. This was on a Piedmont C harp I think.

edit: (This doesn't seem to be the looped version, just a really short version.)

This could also be an epic thread of amassed suckyest playin ever :P.

Edit: I mean potentially so. I can't listen to any of your clip at the moment but the OP opens for some horrendous posts, doesn't it :).

This is a very cool idea for a thread! Although the first time I recorded myself was after about 1 month of player and was a really crappy rendition of "redemption song" using the harptabs tab for it, my first "real" recording of a song I composed myself was this one I call "TheHarpBeatsFasterThanTheHeart:

I believe I'd been playing seriously for perhaps two years at this point... Don't be fooled by the layering of the different loops, I totally cut it all together after the fact! I used a pretty nifty bit of freeware called Ambiloop to do it... Technically, I recorded 4 or 5 differnt tracks of various lenghts, and then Ambiloop let me layer and un-layer them all in tempo with eachother...

This isn't my first recording but it's the earliest I can find right now. It was recorded maybe in 2005.

We were just messin' around.

Don't know how many of us have seen this video, but it definitely files under "earliest recordings".

Amazing. You really couldn't guess this guy is the Hendrix of harmonica today.

Frank, love that jug band stuff!

The only problem with your clips is that most of them are actually quite enoyable.

I suppose not that many players record their playing that much during the first years.

JSin...Hahahahahahahaha - the first year stuff is in the bottom of the river along with a bunch of harps that my friends got a hold of.

Jason's clip is testament to his BURNING desire to SERIOUSLY be the best harmonica player in the world!!! The first time I saw Jason perform it was obvious that boy was taking "NO PRISONERS"...

Here's one you'll get a kick out of Jsin.

That's some serious beatnik verse right there, Frank!

By my comment "most of them are actually quite enjoyable" I obviously meant all the posts in this thread. For earliest recordings all of these have been surprisingly good, in my opinion.

Your first recording has that lee oskar feel - you were talented from the get-go jsin...

Here is a raucous one from days gone by...
