I have a couple of inexpensive powered PA's an Old Shure and a newer Yamaha. I was reading that you can wrap a Shure 57 in a towel and place inside the bass. Anyone ever seen this done?

I dunno but I'm watching this thread with interest as an upright just came into our group too and the guy is still working it out. ----------

Sounds possible and easy enough to try out, though I wouldn't be too confident of the results.
K&K offer a range of pickups for upright bass starting at around $100. I know a couple of guys who have them and are pleased with the results. After trying all sorts of pickup systems, I settled on K&K for my acoustic guitars. Very natural and warm sounding pickup. I've put a K&K pickup on three high end guitars and found them really excellent. Great value for money and super easy to install as well. ---------- LSC

Then there's this magnetic one for double basses.

Larry Taylor, who played for both Canned Heat, Hollywood Fats, and Kim Wilson has not only an SM57, but also had a mic on the inside of his bass as well. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

Bob, You just jogged a wonderful memories of Larry Taylor's playing,it wason the John Mayall Jazz Blues Fusion album. I assume it's the same LT. Mayall may not be for everyone's tastes but I spent weeks and weeks picking up the needle on this LP, it had a huge influence on me. Say what you like, I think he had great musicians on this recording. This album can stand the test of time as it's still great to listen to. http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=1094700

That's the very same bass player. I'm not a fan of the John Mayall thing much but he's the bass player with Hollywood Fats, plus he's been on many different blues recordings over the years, mainly traditional stuff, including with Rod Piazza, Kim Wilson. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

I'll ask our bass player, but his upright is electric. He reads a lot on bass stuff.
